South Bend, Ind.– The Ohio State women’s soccer team (10-11-1) battled the 19th-ranked University of Notre Dame (12-7-0) to a 3-1 loss in its first-ever NCAA Tournament contest Friday night at Notre Dame’s Alumni Field in South Bend, Ind.
The Fighting Irish, who are competing in their 10th consecutive NCAA Tournament, controlled the first half of play as they out shot the Buckeyes by a 13-2 count, including a scoring shot from junior Amanda Guertin at the 4:53 mark of play. Guertin took advantage of an unfortunate bounce inside the OSU zone and blasted a shot past an extended Ohio State goalkeeper Emily Haynam (So., Westerville, Ohio) for the unassisted goal and the 1-0 UND advantage.
Notre Dame carried the momentum into the second half as Irish forward Katie Thorlakson tallied the eventual match-winning goal just 7:55 into the period. Thorlakson buried a rebounded shot past Haynam from just inside the six-yard box. Haynam denied a shot by Irish forward Katie Thorlakson, but was unable to recover as Warner netted her 10th goal of the 2002 season.
The Buckeyes answered in the 61st minute as freshman midfielder Colleen Hoban (Strongsville, Ohio) started the rally with an unassisted goal from just outside the six-yard box. Hoban took possession of a deflected kick by the Irish defense and cut the Notre Dame advantage in half with her seventh goal of the season.
The Fighting Irish retaliated in the 77th minute, however, as Guertin scored her second goal of the night to thwart the potential Buckeye rally. Guertin received as pass from Warner on the left side of the six-yard box and buried a shot across the OSU net and into the right side of the goal for the decisive 3-1 edge.
The Buckeye defense answered the call on countless Irish scoring opportunities as the unit, led by senior defender and co-captain Jen Miller (Centerville, Ohio) and Haynam (10 Saves) helped deny the Irish on 22 of 25 opportunities.
Although her team’s season has now come to a conclusion, Ohio State head coach Lori Walker expressed how significant such a game is to the OSU women’s soccer program.
“I am very proud of this team and what it accomplished this season,” Walker said. “I am especially proud of this group of seniors. This match was a hurdle that no other Buckeye team has ever reached in the 10-year history of the program. The accomplishments this team has made this year will benefit many Ohio State teams in the years to come.”
