OSU senior defender Jen Miller received the Defensive Player ofthe Big Ten Women’s Soccer Tournament award for her efforts inholding each of Ohio State’s opponents through the three-roundaffair to just 1.00 goal per contest. In addition, Buckeyesophomore forward Lisa Grubb was the recipient of the Offensive MVPin the tournament as she tallied a goal in the victory over Purdue.Both Grubb and Miller went 2-for-2 on penalty kicks in Ohio State’sshoot out victories over Michigan and Purdue in the quarterfinaland semifinal matches. Chad Brown and Andy Rosenband were selectedas the Big Ten Men’s Soccer Offensive and Defensive Players of theWeek, respectively, the Big Ten announced Monday. The honors arethe second of the season for both Brown and Rosenband. Rosenbandreceived the honor Sept. 2 and Brown Oct. 7. Brown recorded sixsaves and smothered several Northwestern scoring opportunities,giving him his eighth shutout of the season and Rosenband scoredtwo goals on four shots in a 2-0 win over the Wildcats Sunday.Brown, now 10-6-1 on the season, leads the conference in shutoutswith eight. He has started 16 of 17 games in which he has played,recording 38 saves and allowing only 13 goals for a 0.78goals-allowed-per game average. Rosenband’s two goals enabled OhioState to gain a share of second place in the Big Ten and earn a No.3 seed in the Big Ten tournament this weekend in State College, Pa.Rosenband, who is one of four Buckeyes to start every game thisseason, leads the team in scoring with 20 points on seven goals andsix assists, including four game-winners.

The women’s soccer team (8-10-3) won the 2002 Big TenTournament 2-1 over Wisconsin in Sunday’s title match at MichiganState’s Old College Field. The Buckeyes, who are automaticqualifiers for the program’s first-ever NCAA Tournament berth, willface Notre Dame (11-7) in first round play on Friday at 7 p.m. inSouth Bend, Ind. The wrestling team kicked off the 2002-03 seasonin strong fashion as five Buckeyes claimed titles at the 2002Michigan State Open. Defending national champion Tommy Rowlandstook the heavyweight division, while fellow junior John Clarkcaptured the title in the 165-pound class. OSU seniors 174 BlakeKaplan, 157 Keaton Anderson and 197 Antan Talamantes also capturedtournament championships. Andy Rosenband scored his team-leadingsixth and seventh goals of the season and Chad Brown recorded hiseighth shutout of the season as the Ohio State men’s soccer teamfinished the regular season Sunday by defeating the NorthwesternWildcats, 2-0, in Evanston, Ill. The win improves Ohio State’soverall record to 11-6-1 and 3-3-0 in conference play. 2002 Big TenMen’s Soccer Championship Pairings Announced: With its two goalsSunday, Ohio State earned a No. 3 seed in the Big Ten tournamentthis weekend, hosted by Penn State University at Jeffery Field inState College, Pa. The Buckeyes will face the No. 6 seed MichiganState Spartans in the first game of the tournament at 11 a.m.Thursday. Ohio State defeated Michigan State earlier this season,3-1, on Oct. 6. If victorious, Ohio State will meet the winner ofthe Northwestern/Michigan game at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Thechampionship will be at 2 p.m. Sunday. The Big Ten Conference hasnamed outside hitter Stacey Gordon the Big Ten Player of the Weekfor her play in home victories against Michigan and Michigan State.In the 3-1 (28-30, 30-20, 30-20, 30-28) win against Michigan,Gordon produced a match-high 32 kills, hit .367 and added amatch-high 15 digs. The 32-kills is the third time this season shehas had 30 or more kills for the fourth time in her career. In the3-1 (30-25, 29-31, 30-17, 30-18) victory over Michigan State,Gordon recorded a match-high 21-kills, hit .333, adding 11 digs,three ace serves and two assist blocks. For the two matches, sheaveraged 6.62 kill and 3.25 digs per game. Gordon hit .352 for thematches and added three ace serves and two assist blocks. With 32kills against Michigan and 21 against Michigan State, Gordonextended her string of matches with double-figure kills to 39 andhas 10 or more kills in 52 of 54 career matches. She has produced20 or more kills in eight of the last 10 matches for the Buckeyes.Gordon’s eighth kill against Michigan gave her 1,000 for her careeras she became the only sophomore for the Buckeyes to reach 1,000kills. She becomes the 15th OSU student-athlete to reach 1,000kills. Gordon currently has 1,045 kills and needs five to move to14th on the Ohio State career kills list. She would pass SherriHelman (1993-96) with 1,049. This marks the third time this seasonthat Gordon has been honored as the Big Ten Player of the Week. Shereceived back-to-back honors in early October, first in losses toMichigan State (2-3) and Michigan (0-3) on the road and then wasCo-Player of the Week in a loss to Wisconsin (1-3) and in the winagainst Northwestern (3-0) in home matches. In her freshman season,Gordon was named Big Ten Player of the Week three times. With thewins last week, Ohio State is now 7-7 in conference play and istied for sixth (three-way). OSU has won seven of its last ninematches after starting the Big Ten season 0-5. Ohio State (13-10overall, 7-7 Big Ten) returns to action this week with a Wednesdaymatch against Indiana (18-8, 8-6) and faces No. 14 Penn State(20-5, 10-4) Friday. Both home matches begin at 7 p.m. The fieldhockey team finished the 2002 Big Ten Field Hockey Tournament thispast weekend with a record of 1-1. The squad, seeded No. 4 defeatedNo. 5-seed Iowa, 3-0, Friday in the first round. The Buckeyes thenlost to No. 1-seed Michigan, 3-2, Saturday in the quarterfinals.Senior Stacey Todd and junior Mariana Solorzano were named to theall-tournament team. The Buckeyes finished their season 8-10overall and 2-4-0 in the Big Ten. The men’s hockey team extendedits winning streak to three with a two-game sweep of Lake SuperiorState over the weekend. The Buckeyes won the first night, 4-1, ledby three points each from R.J. Umberger, Dan Knapp and Ryan Kesler.In the series finale, OSU posted a 5-2 win, with Miguel Laflecherecording career highs for goals (2) and points (3). Chris Olsgard,Daymen Bencharski and Scott May also tallied for OSU. The Buckeyesreturn home to play host to Michigan State this weekend. The teamswill face off at 7:05 p.m. Friday and Saturday in Value City Arenain OSU’s first home CCHA series of the year. The men’s gymnasticsteam was ranked second in the 2003 GymInfo/NCAA Preseason CoachesPoll. Oklahoma, who edged the Buckeyes for the 2002 NCAA title, isranked No. 1 in the poll. The Sooners claimed seven first-placevotes, while OSU, the 2001 NCAA champion, received three. In all,six Big Ten teams are ranked in the Top 8. The Buckeyes, who havewon the last two conference championships, are the highest-rankedteam in the league. OSU is followed by No. 3 Illinois, No. 4 PennState, No. 6 Michigan, No. 7 Iowa and No. 8 Minnesota. The Buckeyeswon the Big Ten team title the last two seasons. They will look todefend their title at home in St. John Arena March 28-29, 2003,when OSU plays host to the Big Ten Championships. The women’sbasketball team tallied its first win under the helm of head coachJim Foster Sunday at Value City Arena. The Buckeyes beatBEAC-Siemens (Budapest, Hungary), 85-53, during their first andonly exhibition game of the season. Coming off a medical redshirtlast year, senior LaToya Turner recorded a double-double as she ledall scorers with 27 points (10-15) and grabbed 12 rebounds.Sophomore Caity Matter, who was also on the floor for the firsttime since she fractured her third metatarsal in her left footduring a practice last November, notched 23 points (9-13 overalland 4-7 from three-point range) for the Buckeyes. Junior CourtneyColeman, a second-team all-conference pick, added 14 points (6-10)to the Ohio State effort. Sophomore Ashley Allen had a solid nightas she earned four points, six boards, seven assists, just threeturnovers (all in the first half) and three steals. The men’sswimming and diving team improved to 3-0 over the weekend with adouble-dual victory over West Virginia and Louisville. With thewins, Bill Wadley, Ohio State head coach, earned his 125th victoryat Ohio State. Wadley will vie for his 150th career win thisweekend when the team hosts two dual meets. Friday, the Buckeyeswill face off against Utah at 5 p.m. in the Mike Peppe AquaticCenter, while Saturday the team plays host to the Miami RedHawks,also in the Peppe pool. The meet vs. Miami Saturday will befollowed by a free swimmers clinic from 2:30 to 3 p.m. The rowingteam wrapped up its fall season in impressive fashion by sweepingthe varsity events at the 2002 Rivanna Romp. The Buckeye firstvarsity 8 took its second-consecutive Rivanna Romp varsity 8 titlewith a time of 13:39.4, beating out Virginia’s first varsity 8(13:40.5). The Ohio State first varsity 4 also was victorious(15:08.9), beating out Virginia’s first 4 (15:12.5). The team isout of action until the Spring season of 2003, where it will lookto defend its 2002 Big Ten championship. The men’s and women’scross country teams will travel to West Lafayette, Ind. to competein the district championships. The men will look to build on thesecond place showing at the Big Ten Championships while the womenwill look to improve on their tenth place finish two weeks ago. Thewomen’s ice hockey team (2-7-1, 2-5-1 WCHA) was defeated by the No.1 Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs, 5-0 Friday and 3-0 Saturday in atwo-game series at the OSU Ice Arena. The Buckeyes are 49-58 inpenalty kills this season. OSU has outshot its opponents 263-260.Sophomore Jeni Creary leads Ohio State with 12 points (five goalsand seven assists). Freshman Jana Harrigan is second on the teamwith four goals. Ohio State takes on No. 8 Providence at 2:05 p.m.Saturday and Connecticut at 2:05 p.m. Sunday in the OSU Ice Arenain Columbus, Ohio. The women’s swimming and diving team won itsthird meet of the season, beating the Louisville Cardinals and theWest Virginia Mountaineers Friday. The Buckeyes defeated WestVirginia 122-112 and Louisville 149-85. Nicole Maglich (Fr.,Sarasota, Fla.) stepped up for the Buckeyes. Maglich scored infirst place in three events, helping the Buckeyes to dominate themeet. The Buckeyes will play host to Utah Friday at the Mike PeppeAquatics Center at 5 p.m. The Buckeyes then go on to competeagainst Miami (Ohio) on Saturday in Oxford, Ohio.
