Men’s Gymnastics Opens Season at Windy City Invitational – Ohio State Buckeyes

%^$COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s gymnastics team opened its season at the Windy City Invitational, hosted by Illinois-Chicago, tonight, finishing fourth. The Buckeyes, ranked third in the preseason, totaled 203.325 points. No. 7 Iowa won the competition (207.650), followed by No. 5 Illinois (207.175) and No. 2 Michigan (206.850). No. 8 Minnesota and host UIC rounded out the scoring.%^$
%^$Dick Huntwork (Jr., Pickerington, Ohio) had the top finish for the Buckeyes, placing first on parallel bars with an 8.800. Earnest Nelson (Sr., Rowlett, Texas) led Ohio State on floor, tying for eighth with a score of 8.750. Eric VanSickle (So., Hilliard, Ohio) was the top Buckeye on pommel horse, posting an 8.750 to finish 10th. On rings, the Buckeyes took three of the top nine spots, with freshman Randy Monahan (Fr., Elizabethtown, Pa.) placing third (8.750). Other top finishes on rings included Mitch Claman (Sr., La Palma, Calif.) (4th, 8.700) and Matt Smith (Jr., Salt Lake City, Utah) (9th, 8.425). Monahan and Nelson tied for eighth on vault, as each scored a 9.050. Nelson and Mike Evans (Jr., Houston, Texas) were the top Buckeyes on horizontal bar. Nelson tied for fifth with a score of 8.700, followed by Evans in seventh (8.650). There were no Buckeyes competing in the all-around.%^$
%^$The meet marked the first collegiate competition for Buckeye freshmen Monahan, Kerry Adderly (Orlando, Fla.) and Cody Trobaugh (Dallas, Texas).%^$
%^$Buckeye junior and co-captain Raj Bhavsar (Houston, Texas), a member of the U.S. National Team, did not compete in the meet in order to rest up for the remainder of the season.%^$
%^$The Buckeyes return to action Feb. 2 when they return to Chicago to face Ilinois-Chicago in a dual meet at 8 p.m. EST.%^$
