Senior kicker and co-captain Mike Nugent was named as the BigTen Special Teams Player of the Week for the second consecutiveweek. In Saturday’s 22-14 win over North Carolina State, Nugentkicked five field goals (50, 30, 33, 46 and 47 yards) to tie aschool record for most field goals in a game. He also tied his ownschool record for most 40-yard plus field goals in a game withthree. Nugent has made seven consecutive field goals, including acareer-long 55-yard attempt as time ran out in a 24-21 win overMarshall two weeks ago. He opened up the N.C. State game with a50-yard trey thus becoming the first OSU player to kick consecutive50-yard field goals. Women’s volleyball senior Stacey Gordon wasnamed the MVP of the Buckeye Classic. In four matches last weekaveraged 6.67 kills, 2.75 digs and .50 blocks per game whilehitting .493. Gordon hit .857 (13-1-14) in two games in OSU’s 3-0win over Youngstown State that saw the Buckeyes set an OSU matchrecord for team hitting percentage of .595. She had 17 kills, eightdigs, four blocks and two aces while hitting .519 against FloridaInternational; had 25 kills (.339), 15 digs and two aces againstNortheastern and 25 kills (.583), eight digs, two aces and anassist block against Montana State.
Athletics Good Stuff
The men’s soccer team will face a pair of non-conferenceopponents this weekend as the Buckeyes (2-3-1) move closer to thestart of Big Ten play in early October. OSU will host Bowling Greenat 5 p.m. Friday before traveling to Kentucky at 2:30 p.m. Sunday.In their last four matches, the Buckeyes are 2-1-1 and over thenext three weeks will play four of their next five matches in JesseOwens Memorial Stadium. Ohio State is coming off an impressive 4-2win vs. Virginia Tech Sunday at the Penn State/Nike Classic, whichmarked the most goals the Buckeyes have scored in a match since a4-1 victory over Creighton on Sept. 21, 2001. Senior Justin Cookscored two goals and added an assist in the win and was named tothe all-tournament team along with sophomore Taylor Korpieski. Headcoach John Bluem notched his 69th career victory in the process,which is just three wins shy of the Ohio State career wins recordheld jointly by Al Bianco (1979-86) and Gary Avedikian (1987-96).Women’s volleyball, ranked No. 20 in the country, enters Big Tenplay with a 10-0 non-conference record this Friday at Wisconsin andat Northwestern Saturday. OSU won four matches last week includingthree to win the Buckeye Classic Championship. OSU’s Stacey Gordonwas named the MVP of the Classic with Marisa Main and Maya Mappbeing named to the All-Tournament Team. Eric Parker has joined thebaseball team as a volunteer assistant. Parker, who will work withthe Buckeye outfielders and catchers, comes to Ohio State afterserving as the head coach of the freshman team at Upper ArlingtonHigh School in 2003 and 2004. Parker, 30, played two seasons (1996and 1997) at James Madison University, where he earned a bachelor’sdegree in kinesiology in 1997. He played his freshman and sophomoreseasons (1993 and 1994) at the University of Virginia beforetransferring to JMU. Parker was signed as an undrafted free agentwith the Boston Red Sox and played the 1997 season with the LowellSpinners Baseball Club in Lowell, Mass. The women’s soccer team(4-2-1, 0-0-1 Big Ten) had its four-match win streak snapped Sundaywith a 0-0 tie at No. 16 Wisconsin (6-1-1, 0-0-1 Big Ten) inMadison, Wis. Ohio State handed UW its second blemish in sevenmatches, firing 23 shots to UW’s 12 and held a 5-to-2 edge in shotson goal. Lisa Grubb was one of five Buckeyes who recorded at leastthree shots with five as Ohio State outshot its sixth opponent inseven matches this season. Jen Heaney played the full 110 minutesin goal, notching two saves and her first shutout of the season.The Buckeyes continue league play at 7:30 p.m. Friday as they playhost to Purdue at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. Ohio State willfinish the weekend with another home match against Indiana at 2:30p.m. Sunday. The women’s tennis team finished its first weekend ofaction in the fall season with five victories in consolationsingles action Sunday at the University of Tennessee/St. Mary’sFall Classic in Knoxville, Tenn. Sonia Ruzimovsky (Brooklyn,N.Y./Brooklyn Tech) and Caitlin O’Keefe (Fr., Troy, Mich./Troy)both scored victories to earn third place finishes in theirflights. Competing in Flight Six, Ruzimovsky swept Bonnie Baird ofFurman, 7-6, 6-1, for her second victory of the weekend. O’Keefetopped fellow-Buckeye Lindsay Bryan (Sr., New Orleans, La./UrsulineAcademy), 6-5, 6-4, in Flight Three. The Buckeyes return to actionOct. 1-3 at the Kentucky Fall Classic in Lexington, Ky. The crosscountry team competed in the Lou Onesty Invitational inCharlottesville, Va., this past Saturday. Both men’s and women’ssquads posted strong performances with the men finishing second,while the women placed sixth. The men were led by Brian Olinger(Jr., Fresno, Ohio), who placed second in the men’s 8-kilometer runwith a time of 24:44.7. On the women’s side, the Buckeyes werepaced by Melanie Price (So., Cincinnati, Ohio), who placed 17th inthe 5-kilometer run with a time of 19:20.70. The Buckeyes returnSaturday in Minneapolis, Minn., to compete in the Roy GriakInvitational. The field hockey team (4-2; 0-0 Big Ten) defeated theBall State Cardinals, 2-1, in double overtime Sunday at North TurfField. With the win, head coach Anne Wilkinson earned her 100thBuckeye victory. Wilkinson currently is second in all-time winningpercentage in the OSU field hockey record books. Sophomoreco-captain Saskia Müller (Zürich,Switzerland/Gymnasium Unterstrass) notched the gamewinning goal inextra periods to help OSU to its third-consecutive win. DeenRebstock (Sr., St. Louis, Mo./Whitfield) was the other Buckeyescorer, posting her goal in the first half. Goalkeeper LindsayWilliams (Jr., Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna Township) registeredeight saves. Ohio State continues its homestand when it opens upthe Big Ten Conference schedule against Penn State at 1 p.m.Saturday at North Turf Field.
