Ohio State’s Parker Wins Two Medals at Fencing World Championships – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State All-American Colin Parker (Fr., Fayetteville, Ga.) won two medals at the 2001 World Junior and Cadet Fencing Championships in Gdansk, Poland, April 9-16. In junior saber, Parker claimed the bronze medal. In the team event, the U.S. National Team defeated France in the junior saber competition to win the world title and earn the gold.
In individual competition, Parker was defeated by eventual-champion Tamas Decsi of Hungary in the semifinals, 15-8. After receiving a first-round bye, Parker posted four wins in the tournament. Parker’s closest bout was against Serhiv Shkalikov of the Ukraine, who he defeated, 15-14, in the Round of 16.
The U.S. team, composed of Parker, Timothy Hagamen, Ivan Lee and Jason Rogers, posted wins over Iran, Romania and Germany to reach the final. The U.S. squad defeated France, 45-39, in the final.
