Men’s Hockey Tops UNO in Overtime, 5-4 – Ohio State Buckeyes

OMAHA, Neb. – Miguel Lafleche scored 38 seconds into overtime to give the Ohio State men’s hockey team a 5-4 victory over Nebraska-Omaha in the first round of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association playoffs tonight at the Omaha Civic Auditorium. The Buckeyes now lead the best-of-three series, 1-0. Dave Steckel posted a goal and two assists for the Buckeyes, while Paul Caponigri had three helpers.
With the win, the Buckeyes improve to 17-16-2 overall and end a five-game losing streak. UNO drops to 22-14-3. The squads will meet at 8:05 p.m. (EST) Saturday for the second game of the series in Omaha, Neb.
The Mavericks got on the board quickly, as Jeff Hoggan tallied 55 seconds into the game, assisted by Zach Scribner and Andrew Wong. UNO outshot the Buckeyes, 9-8, in the period.
The Buckeyes tallied three goals in the second period, including two power-play scores, to take a 3-1 lead into the second intermission. Steckel posted the first goal for the Buckeyes at the 1:28 mark as he tipped in a Mike McCormick pass from the side of the net for his team-best 17th goal of the season. Caponigri also had an assist on the goal. Scott May scored just over one minute later to put Ohio State up by one. The Buckeyes scored with 1:02 remaining in the period, as Jean-Francois Dufour scored with the Buckeyes on a 5-on-3 power play, assisted by Doug Andress and Caponigri. The tally gives Dufour a career-high 15 goals this season. In the third period, UNO scored three unanswered goals to take a 4-3 lead. At the 2:02 mark, David Brisson scored a power-play goal and Greg Zanon added another power-play tally 10:25 into the stanza to tie the game at three. Dave Noel-Bernier gave the Mavericks the lead with a goal at the 16:54 mark. Eric Skaug then tied the game at four with a goal less than a minute later (17:44), assisted by Steckel and R.J. Umberger. The Mavericks outshot the Buckeyes, 13-8, in the period.
The Buckeyes won the game just 38 seconds into overtime, as Lafleche took a Caponigri pass and got it past goalie Dan Ellis for the win. Steckel added an assist on the goal. It was the only shot on goal in the stanza. The goal was Lafleche’s second overtime game-winner of the season.
Ohio State was 2-for-7 on the power play and stopped 7-of-9 UNO chances.
Mike Betz made 23 saves in goal for the Buckeyes, while Ellis stopped 26-of-31 OSU shots.
