OSU Fencers Prepare for Regionals – Ohio State Buckeyes

The Ohio State fencing team looks to build upon a strong performances from last weekend’s Midwest Fencing Championships as they travel to the NCAA Regionals on March, 9-10 in Detroit, Mich.
Looking To Advance
The Buckeyes hope to keep their individual seasons alive at the NCAA Regionals Saturday. Those who advance will compete at the NCAA Championships March 21-25.
The Midwest Championships proved to be a preview of this weeks regionals. The buckeyes will face seven of the 10 teams they competed against at last weekend’s Midwest Fencing Championships
OSU Showcases Talent
The Ohio State fencing team took fourth place at the Midwest Fencing Championships held in Notre Dame Feb. 24-25. Notre Dame captured the team title scoring 870 points while Northwestern (755) and Wayne State (725) rounded out the Top 3.
The team scores were a composite of the men’s and women’s team scores. The men finished second out of 11 teams, scoring 395 points. Undefeated Notre Dame captured the men’s title. The OSU women’s squad finished seventh with 225 points. Northwestern won the team title with 425 points while Notre Dame (420) and Wayne State (340) finished second and third.
Alexandra Shklar (Fr., Jerusalem, Israel) captured first-place in women’s epee after defeating Anna Carnick of Notre Dame, 15-14 in the final round.
Sara Bowen (Sr., Trenton, Ohio/Edgewood) took the women’s sabre title after defeating Northwestern’s Carly Wells 15-8. FaneGroes (Sr., Copenhagen, Denmark/Vordingborg) finished third in women’s in women’s foil
For the men, Nathan Weir ( Fr., Kennewick, Wa/ Kennewick) posted a third-place finish in foil while teammate Kitz Siebert (Fr., Lawrence, Ka.). placed fifth in men’s sabre.
National Competitor
Colin Parker has exceeded expectations this season. After winning the World Cup in France, Parker is ranked No.3 in men’s sabre by the United States Fencing Association, on both the senior and junior national levels.
Parker will participate in the World Championships in Gdansk,Poland April 9-16th.
The OSU Coach
Head coach Vladimir Nazlymov began his quest to develop the Ohio State program last season. Nazlymov led the men’s team to a 14-8 record and the women’s squad to an 18-8 mark. He also guided two Buckeyes, Fane Groes and Geoff Kane, to All-America status.
Before coming to Ohio State, Nazlymov spent eight years as the head coach for the Kansas City, Mo., School District where he designed and developed an Olympic-caliber fencing program.
From 1986-1988 Nazlymov served as the USSR National Team’s head coach. The USSR went on to win the gold medal at the 1986 World Championships and silver medals at the 1987 Worlds and 1988 Olympics
Nazlymov was the head coach of the Soviet Union Military Fencing team from 1976-1990. He guided his students to two Olympic gold medals and 12 World Championships, as well as eight European Championship crowns.
Competing for the Soviet Union, Nazlymov was a three- time Olympic Champion (1968, 1976, 1980). He earned the Olympic silver medal in 1972 and 1976, while notching the Olympic bronze medal in 1972.
