Buckeyes Win Collegiate Nationals For 21st Title – Ohio State Buckeyes

Ohio State successfully defended its national title for a second-consecutive year at the 2001 U.S. Collegiate National Championships at the Midtown Aquatic Center in Newport News, Va. Saturday. The Buckeyes captured an overall score of 99 over second-place Stanford’s 88 to reign as the Collegiate National Champions for the 21st time in the 25-year history of the annual competition.
Carolina Moraes (Jr., Sao Paulo, Brazil) led the Buckeyes with four first-place performances in the solo, duet, trio and in figures events to win the meet’s individual high point title. In the solo competition, Carolina Moraes scored 96.933 over Stanford’s Shannon Montague (95.000).Olympians Carolina Moraes and her twin sister Isabela Moraes (Jr., Sao Paulo, Brazil) nabbed first place in the duet, scoring 97.667. Mary Hofer (Jr., Spring Valley, Calif.) joined the Moraes twins for a first-place win in the trio with the score of 97.000.
In the team competition, The Ohio State `A’ team’s “Firebird” routine earned the top score of 98.733 over Stanford’s team routine score of 98.000. Swimming for the `A’ team were Victoria Bowen (So., Plano, Texas), Katie Edwards (Sr., Greer, SC), Hofer, Suzanna Hyatt (So., Indianapolis, Ind.), Beth Kreimer (Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio), Anna Eng (Sr., West Chester, Pa.), Kristen Price (Jr., Mesa, Ariz.) and Isabela Moraes.
Two hundred athletes from 21 universities competed at the 2001 Collegiate National Championship. The competition marks the conclusion of the Buckeyes’ 2001 undefeated, championship season.
