Men’s Hockey Falls in Double Overtime to UNO, 4-3 – Ohio State Buckeyes

OMAHA, Neb. – The Ohio State men’s hockey team was defeated in double overtime by Nebraska-Omaha in the decisive third game of the first round of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association playoffs tonight at the Omaha Civic Auditorium.
With the loss, the No. 7-seed Buckeyes end their season 17-18-2 overall, 13-13-2 in the CCHA. No. 4-seed UNO improves to 24-14-3 and moves on to face Michigan in the CCHA Semifinals at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit Friday.
In the first period, the Buckeyes scored the first goal of the game for the first time in nine contests. At the 8:13 mark, Paul Caponigri tallied his 12th goal of the year, as he put in the rebound of a Doug Andress shot with the Buckeyes on the power play. R.J. Umberger also had a helper on the goal. The Mavericks tied the game with a power-play goal of their own, by David Brisson, at the 17:29 mark. The Buckeyes outshot the Mavericks, 14-7, in the stanza.
The Buckeyes tallied the only goal of the second period. Daymen Bencharski scored his third goal of the year at the 9:07 mark, assisted by Luke Pavlas and T.J. Latorre. Goalie Mike Betz stopped all seven Maverick shots. OSU posted 10 shots on net in the period.
In the third period, UNO’s Dave Noel-Bernier tallied 1:26 into the period to tie the game at two. The score remained tied until the Mavericks’ Billy Pugliese scored at the 18:25 mark to give UNO its first lead of the game. Just 30 seconds later, the Buckeyes tied the game. Caponigri tallied his second goal of the contest after the Buckeyes pulled Betz for an extra attacker. Umberger and Jean-Francois Dufour had the assists on the play. The Mavericks outshot the Buckeyes, 15-13, in the period.
There was no scoring in the first overtime period. UNO outshot the Buckeyes, 8-6, in the period.
In the second overtime, the Mavericks won the game and the series at the 7:31 mark on Pugliese’s second goal of the game. Ohio State posted four shots on net in the period, while UNO had three shots on goal.
Betz made 36 saves in net for the Buckeyes. Ellis stopped 44-of-47 Ohio State shots. The Buckeyes were 1-for-4 on the power play and UNO was 1-for-6 with the man advantage.
