In addition to these games, the cheerleaders appear at many functions, ranging from pep rallies to alumni gatherings or charity events. In March 1999, we cheered for our Men’s Basketball team in the Final Four in Tampa Bay. We have also cheered for our women’s volleyball teams and our men’s ice hockey teams in the NCAA Tournaments. During winter, 1998, we followed our hockey team to its first Final Four appearance in Boston.
The Ohio State Cheerleading squads have been to the National Collegiate Cheerleading Championship Finals twelve of the past fourteen years. The 2000-2001 squad placed SECOND in the Championship in January, watch for their performance on ESPN. OHIO STATE CHEERLEADING SQUADS WON THE NATIONAL COLLEGIATE CHEERLEADING CHAMIONSHIPS IN 1981, 1983, and 1993.
The Scarlet Cheerleading Squad ranges from 16 to 20 members, male and female. The Gray Cheerleading Squad ranges from 10 to 18 members, male and female. Tryouts for both the Scarlet and Gray squads will be held during the weekend of April 7 and 8, 2001. Incoming freshmen or incoming transfer students who have been admitted to Ohio State as well as current OSU students will be eligible to tryout. By having our tryouts in the spring, we will be able to have both of our squads practice before fall quarter starts, thus, both squads will be more experienced and better prepared for the school year’s games and events.
All OSU Cheerleaders must be full-time students and maintain a 2.0 accumulative grade point average. Ohio State Cheerleaders have access to study tables and tutors provided by the Department of Athletics. Cheerleaders receive priority scheduling to allow them to practice together at a set time.
The squads attend a college cheerleading camp in August and then practice 3 to 4 weeks full time before school starts. During Fall and Winter quarters, practices are held 3 times a week. In addition individual members and partners practice on their own as needed.
The Cheerleading squads are financially supported by the Department of Athletics – uniforms, travel, etc. are provided. Although there are no full scholarships for cheerleading at OSU, through donations from appearances and individuals interested in the cheerleading program, each 1999-00 Scarlet squad cheerleader received $1200 deducted from their Spring Quarter tuition, each Gray squad cheerleader of the 99-00 squad received $400. The amount of support is determined annually.
Cheerleading at Ohio State has many rewards, it is an opportunity to be a part of Ohio State and many athletic events. It is an opportunity to meet people of all ages and to work as a team. Cheerleading is a big commitment, we want you to realize the responsibility and commitment involved. Being a part of the OSU Cheerleading Squad will give you great memories of your college years.
