Fencing Heads to Midwest Championships – Ohio State Buckeyes

%^$The Ohio State fencing team returns to action Friday-Saturday at the Midwest Conference Fencing Championships, hosted by Notre Dame Feb. 27 and 28.%^$
%^$Conference Crown
%^$The Midwest Conference Fencing Championships begin Saturday in Notre Dame . The first day of competition will feature the squad-based competition, while the second day will showcase the individual competition. Twelve teams will battle, including the seventh ranked Notre Dame women’s fencing team and the No. 1 and undefeated men’s squad.%^$
%^$The Buckeye fencer to watch this weekend is Alexandra Shklar. In her first season she has been meeting high expectations and is a contender for the individual crown.%^$
%^$The men’s sabre and epee teams are expected to place among the Top 2 while the women’s sabre team is expected to be a contender for Top 3 honors.%^$
%^$Battle In Durham
%^$The Ohio State men’s fencing team posted a third-place finish with a record of 3-2 at the Duke Invitational in Durham, N.C. Feb.10.%^$
%^$Notre Dame captured the team title (5-0) while Stanford finished second with a 4-1 record.%^$
%^$Colin Parker (Fr., Fayetteville, Ga./The Heritage School) led the OSU men’s team with a 12-3 record in men’s saber.%^$
%^$Other top performers included Guy Loftin (So. Overland Park, Ks./Banstow) Alan Jones (So., Ft Leonard Wood, Mo./Waynesville) and Kitz Siebert (Fr., Lawrence, Ka.). Loftin and Siebert followed Parker, posting 9-6 records in men’s saber. Jones finished with a record of 9-6 in men’s epee.%^$
%^$The women’s fencing team struggled against formidable competition at the Duke Fencing Invitational in Durham, N.C., placing sixth with a record of 0-5. Stanford University posted a 5-0 record to take first place. Notre Dame (4-1) and North Carolina (3-2) rounded out the Top 3.%^$
%^$Sara Bowen (Sr., Trenton, Ohio/Edgewood) posted a record of 13-2 in women’s saber while Fane Groes (Sr., Copenhagen, Denmark/Vordingborg) finished 12-1 in women’s foil. Alexandra Shklar (Fr., Jerusalem, Israel) also finished strong with a record of 11-4 in women’s epee.%^$
%^$The OSU Coach
%^$Head coach Vladimir Nazlymov began his quest to develop the Ohio State program last season. Nazlymov led the men’s team to a 14-8 record and the women’s squad to an 18-8 mark. He also guided two Buckeyes, Fane Groes and Geoff Kane, to All-America status.%^$
%^$Before coming to Ohio State, Nazlymov spent eight years as the head coach for the Kansas City, Mo., School District where he designed and developed an Olympic-caliber fencing program.%^$
%^$From 1986-1988 Nazlymov served as the USSR National Team’s head coach. The USSR went on to win the gold medal at the 1986 World Championships and silver medals at the 1987 Worlds and 1988 Olympics%^$
%^$Nazlymov was the head coach of the Soviet Union Military Fencing team from 1976-1990. He guided his students to two Olympic gold medals and 12 World Championships, as well as eight European Championship crowns.%^$
%^$Competing for the Soviet Union, Nazlymov was a three- time Olympic Champion (1968, 1976, 1980). He earned the Olympic silver medal in 1972 and 1976, while notching the Olympic bronze medal in 1972.
