Box Score
COLUMBUS, Ohio-The Ohio State women’s hockey team was unable to make up a one-goal deficit after St. Cloud State scored twice in 43 seconds at the end of the second period. The Buckeyes fell, 2-1, to the visiting Huskies Friday in game one of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association series at the OSU Ice Rink. Shana Frost (Jr., Frankford, Ontario/Bayside) scored Ohio State’s only goal, at the 8:16 mark of the second period, and goalie April Stojak (So., Kent, Ohio/Shattuck-St. Mary’s) recorded a season-high 26 saves. The Buckeyes, winless in their last six games, slip to 2-5-2 overall (1-4-2 in the WCHA) while the Huskies improve to .500 at 3-3-1 overall (3-3-1 in the WCHA).
After a scoreless first period, St. Cloud held a 10-8 advantage in shots. The Huskies attempted seven shots, four on goal, in the first five minutes of play.
The Buckeyes came out of the gate flying in the first part of the second stanza as most of the action took place in the St. Cloud State zone. Frost’s power-play goal, her second of the season, put Ohio State on the board at 8:16. Emily Hudak (Jr., Marblehead, Mass./Cushing Academy) sent a pass to Katie Frohreich (Jr., Baudette, Minn./Lake of the Woods) on the point. Frohreich found Jeni Creary (Fr., Shell Lake, Saskatchewan/Notre Dame College), who stalled along the boards before delivering a pass to Frost. Frost got a look at some empty net and capitalized.
Ohio State’s lead began to disintegrate late in the second. At 17:02, SCSU’s Jennifer Swanson was whistled for interference and Sarah Van Riper (Jr., Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) began serving Stojak’s high sticking minor. Stojak stopped Fiona McLeod’s attempt but was not prepared for Kobi Kawamoto’s rebound shot at 17:54. Forty-three seconds later, it was still 4-on-4 when Andrea Keller converted off a give-and-go from Abby Cooper. Ohio State managed nine shots on net in the third period but could not convert.
St. Cloud State outshot Ohio State, 28-22. The Buckeyes were 1-for-5 on the power play and held the Huskies scoreless through five chances.
Stojak’s 26 saves eclipsed her season high of 23. St. Cloud netminder Laura Gieselman tallied 21 saves for the win.
Ohio State and St. Cloud State will meet again at 7:05 p.m. Saturday in the series finale at the OSU Ice Rink.
