Winthrop Head Coach Gregg Marshall
“My congratulations goes out to Jim O’Brien and the Ohio State Buckeyes. They were too much for us to handle tonight. You have to give them credit, they are multi-talented and they really deserved this victory.
“I thought we played well the first 17 minutes and then they started hitting shots and we didn’t. They had five guys in double figures, which is a very balanced attack.”
Ohio State Head Coach Jim O’Brien
“I am really happy to have the opportunity to win the game in the fashion we did. I am not sure if many people understand, in my opinion, how good Winthrop is. They were as quick and physical as us, but I thought we played well and did a good job on defense. I never envisioned us to win this game by this score. This is a good game for us.
“The zone slowed things down. It was something we wanted to take a look at and see how they attacked it. It seemed to be effective, so we played it more. You have to be concerned to play zone against those guys because they make so many threes, fortunately they missed them.
“We have to get our big guys more involved. We have to get the ball inside to them. We won’t be effective with only our perimeter guys taking jump shots.”
Brian Brown
“I think at the 12-13-minute mark we began to put them away. Their big guys were hurting us. They have a lot of guys similar in build, between 6-3 and 6-6. Coach threw the zone defense and it worked well for us. I think our zone was the key to the victory, they didn’t know what to do and were just jacking up threes.
“This is a very good win. We never underestimated them. We knew they were going to play hard. They have been in the NCAA (Tournament) and they are a good team. They competed well, but we had to get in there and go after them.”
Sean Connolly
“I thought we played well. This is a good team that has been in the tournament the last three years. They have a lot of guys back and it is a good win to beat them by more than 20.”
Boban Savovic
“We held them to 20-some points in the second half. We did a good job. Our goal was to not let them score a lot of points and we did just that.”
