COLUMBUS, Ohio-The Ohio State rowing team’s first varsity eight won its opening race of the season Saturday in Pittsburgh, Pa., by defeating 19 other teams at the Head of The Ohio on the Allegheny River.
The Buckeyes finished with a winning time of 14 minutes, 20.9 seconds over second-place Michigan State, 14:21.6.
Ohio State’s second entry finished sixth with a time of 14:48.1.
Andy Teitelbaum, Ohio State head coach, said it was good to start the fall season on the right foot.
“We rowed well,” Teitelbaum said. “I was happy to have our second boat beat all the other second boats. That really shows the depth of our program. It is always good to start with a win against the caliber of teams we competed against.”
It is the second-consecutive victory for the Buckeyes at the Head of The Ohio race. Ohio State beat 25 other crews in 2000.
The Buckeyes will next travel to Boston, Mass., Oct. 21 for the Head of the Charles. OSU will play host to the Speakmon Ohio Race Oct. 27 on the Scioto River in Columbus, Ohio.
