Ohio State Crew Advances to Petite Finals of NCAA Championships – Ohio State Buckeyes

%^$CAMDEN, N.J.–The Ohio State women’s crew advanced Saturday to the Petite Finals Sunday in the varsity eight, varsity four and second varsity eight races of the 2000 NCAA Championships. In each of the semifinals Saturday, the Buckeyes narrowly missed the top spots to advance to the Grand Finals Sunday on the Cooper River in Camden County, N.J.%^$
%^$”We made the Petite Final for each race and I was really happy in our performance today,” Andy Teitelbaum, OSU head coach, said. “I felt that we had our best races in the second varsity and varsity eight and even though we did not make the Grand Final, we can still capture seventh place at the NCAA’s. We will work hard and strive to have our best races tomorrow.”%^$
%^$The varsity four crew competed well in one of the toughest races of the day. The Buckeyes were neck and neck with Boston and California in the first 500 meters, but the Buckeyes were unable to stay within the top two spots and fell to fourth place (7:42.17). California finished first with a time of 7:36.17, just beating Boston, who placed second (7:36.39).%^$
%^$In the second varsity eight semifinals, the Buckeyes worked to stay within Washington and Michigan State’s lead, but fell back to fourth place in the last 1,000 meters. Ohio State finished in fifth place with a time of 6:59.89. Washington steadily increased their lead to capture first place with a time of 6:46.20 as California clinched the second spot (6:50.60).0%^$
%^$Competing in one of the strongest heats, the varsity eight crew fell behind in the beginning and could not make up time to place sixth in the semifinal. Right from the start, Washington controlled the race, as they held a one-half boat lead at the 1,000-meter mark. The Huskies recorded their third victory for the day with a time of 6:26.29.%^$

%^$The Buckeyes’ varsity eight crew will compete in the Petite Final at 11:20 a.m. against Northeastern, Michigan State, Boston, Harvard and Syracuse. Michigan, Virginia, Brown, Washington, California and Princeton will compete in the last race for the championship beginning at 11:40 a.m.%^$
