COLUMBUS, Ohio – In their first trip to the 2000 NCAA Championships, the Ohio State women’s crew advanced to the second day of competition today at Cooper River in Camden County, N.J. The Buckeyes did fall short of automatically qualifying for the finals in the second varsity and first varsity four race, but the Buckeyes’ first varsity eight captured third in the repechage race to advance to Saturday’s semifinals. The Buckeyes must make the Top 3 spots in the second varsity eight and first varsity four repechage races to advance to tomorrow’s semifinals.
“Even though we did not advance directly to the finals, we are still right in the middle of the pack,” OSU head coach Andy Teitelbaum said. “I was thrilled and excited for our team, because the competition is so strong and we still held our own. With our racing today, we validated why we were selected to the NCAA’s.”
In today’s heats, the Buckeyes placed third in the varsity four with a time of 7:30, falling to 1999 champion Washington and Princeton. Throughout the race, there was little distance between Princeton and Ohio State’s boats, but the Buckeyes fell just short in the last 500 meters to take third place.
The second varsity eight crew captured fourth place in their heat with a time of 6:53.10 as Virginia automatically qualified for the championships with a first-place time of 6:34.60. The Buckeyes must make the Top 3 spots in the second varsity eight and first varsity four repechage races to advance to tomorrow’s semifinals.
In the varsity eight race, Ohio State’s crew notched a 6:38.29, narrowly missing the top two spots to qualify for the semifinals. Knowing they had to place third or higher, the Buckeyes came back strong in the first varsity repechage event, finishing third with a time of 6:35. Like their first heat, the Buckeyes stayed with Yale, but steadily increased their lead in the final 500 meters to clinch the last spot.
The second day of competition will begin on Saturday, opening with the first varsity four repechage race at 10:20 a.m.
