Ohio State Fencers Head To NCAA Regionals – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio- – The Ohio State fencing team will travel to Appleton, Wis. to compete in the NCAA Regional competition march 11. There will be no team scores kept at the competition. Individual team members will try to qualify for the NCAA Championships at the regional.
MIDWEST CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Ohio State fencing team finished the Midwest Fencing Championships in third place. The Buckeyes finished behind tournament winner Notre Dame and runner-up, Northwestern. The Buckeyes scored 730 points at the tournament. The men’s squad finished second overall with 375 points. Notre Dame won the men’s competition with 450 points. The women’s squad finished in third place with 355 points. Northwestern won the women’s competition with 435 points. Notre Dame finished second with 410 points.

SQUAD RESULTS
The men’s epee squad was led by freshman Alan Jones who finished in first place. Junior Geoffe Kane was eighth in the men’s epee, Scott Francis finished in 16th place and Greg Bianca finished in 26th place in the men’s epee. The squad scored 135 points for the Buckeyes.
The men’s foil squad was paced by junior Greg Carlino who tied for third place. Kevin Dalley was 27th and Ray Laning finished in 40th place. The squad scored 125 points for the Buckeyes.
The men’s sabre squad was anchored by Michael Siward who finished in 15th place. Joe Wernet placed 16th, Ian Cliffe was 22nd, John Jakelsky finished 23 and Michael Dangler ended the tournament in 29th place. The squad scored 115 points for the Buckeyes.
The women’s epee squad was led by Toya Holland who finished in seventh place. Leah Tracey was 12th and Jaime Rice finished in 14th place. The squad scored 115 points for the Buckeyes.
The women’s foil squad was anchored by Fane Groes. She placed first in women’s foil . Sally Dowding was ninth, Mindy Sommer placed 31st and Miranda Gardner was 34th in the women’s foil. The squad scored 115 points for the Buckeyes.
The women’s sabre squad was paced by Sara Bowen who finished in sixth place. Lynn El-Hillow tied for 10th and Kelly McCafferty placed 20th in the women’s sabre. The squad scored 125 points for the Buckeyes.
LAST YEAR’S RESULTS
In the NCAA Championships last year, four Buckeyes placed. The lone member of the men’s squad to place was Jeff Carlino in the men’s epee. He finished 21st. On the women’s squad, Toya Holland placed 16th in women’s epee and Yelana Kalkina placed third in women’s foil. Fane Groes was 12th in women’s foil.

PERSONAL BESTS
So far this season several Buckeyes have posted personal bests in their weapon class. Scott Francis finished last season 26-26. This season he is 26-16 in men’s epee. Greg Carlino has 38-foil wins this season, two more than last season. Michael Siward posted 3 wins last season and has 17 this season in men’s sabre.
Toya Holland has 57 wins under her belt this season and last year she had 53. Lynn El-Hillow has 46 wins in women’s sabre this season. Last season she had 39 in women’s foil.
