Ohio State Fencers Finish 12th At NCAA Championships – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Four members of the Ohio State fencing team competed in the NCAA Fencing Championships March 22-26 and helped the Buckeyes finish in 12th place. Penn State University won the National Championship with 175 points.
INDIVIDUAL RESULTS
The Ohio State fencing team finished 12th at the NCAA Championships this week with 42 points. The competition started March 22 and finished Sunday. Penn State won the National Championship with 175 points. The Buckeyes had four fencers qualify for the NCAA Championships.
Fane Groes (Jr., Copenhagen, Denmark) finished in seventh place in women’s foil. She had 15 wins and eight losses. She scored 15 team-points for the Buckeyes. Toya Holland (So., Columbus, Ohio) finished 21st in the women’s epee. She won five bouts and lost 18. Last year Holland finished 15th at the NCAA Championships.
The men’s squad was anchored by Geoffe Kane (Jr., Vancouver, Wash.) who finished 11th in men’s epee. He scored 12 team-points for the Buckeyes. Alan Jones (Fr., Ft. Leonardwood, Mo.) finished 16 in men’s epee. He added 10 team-points to the Ohio State total.
The Buckeyes finished in 10th place at the 1999 NCAA Championships.
ALL AMERICANS
The top four fencers in each weapon earn first team All-America honors. Places five through eight are second team and nine through 12 are honorable mentions. This year the Buckeyes had one second-team All-American, Fane Groes. Groes placed seventh in the women’s foil. She was an honorable mention All-American last year.
Geoffe Kane was an honorable mention All-American with his 11th place finish in men’s epee.
Junior Geoffe Kane overcame recent surgery for tonsillitis to qualify for the NCAA Championships. He finished the season with a record of 42-27. Last season he was redshirted but the season before that he finished 47-18. This was his first trip to the NCAA Championships. Freshman Alan Jones made his NCAA Championship debut with an impressive 16th place finish. He was on a torrid streak of wins going into the competition. He went undefeated at both the Midwestern Collegiate Championships and the NCAA Regionals. Jones finished the season 44-28.
Junior Fane Groes did what was expected of her – become a two-time All-American. Her 15-8 mark at the NCAA Championships and 97-12 on the season. She improved from her 1999 NCAA Championship finish of 12th place to seventh place in 2000.
Sophomore Toya Holland made her second trip to the NCAA Championships. She was an at-large bid winner and finished 21st in women’s epee. She finished in 15th place in 1999. Her season record was 66-42

PERSONAL BESTS
Several Buckeyes posted personal bests in their weapon class. Scott Francis finished last season 26-26. This season he is 32-16 in men’s epee. Greg Carlino has 45-foil wins this season, nine more than last season. Michael Siward posted three wins last season and has 20 this season in men’s sabre.
Toya Holland has 66 wins under her belt this season and last year she had 53. Lynn El-Hillow has 50 wins in women’s sabre this season. Last season she had 39 in women’s foil.
Fane Groes finished with 97 wins, 12 more than last season.
RETURNING STRONG
All four Ohio State NCAA Championship qualifiers will return for the 2000-01 season. Jones is a freshman, Kane is a junior, Groes is a junior and Holland is a sophomore.
