Penn Is One of Five Finalists – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio–Ohio State senior guard Scoonie Penn is one of five finalists for the Chip Hilton Player of the Year Award given to the Division I men’s player who epitomizes the character and values synonymous with the 24-book Chip Hilton Sports Series.%^$
%^$Penn, a native of Salem, Mass., led the Buckeyes to a 23-7 overall record and a 13-3 mark in the Big Ten. The Buckeyes shared the Big Ten regular-season championship with Michigan State. Penn, a first-team all-Big Ten selection, averaged 15.6 points and led OSU in assists with 130. He is a candidate for both the John Wooden and Naismith Player of the Year awards as well as the Basketball Hall of Fame’s Frances Pomeroy Naismith Award, presented to the nation’s top senior male player 6-feet and under.%^$
%^$Others being considered for the 2000 Chip Hilton Award are: Shane Battier (Duke), Mark Madsen (Stanford), Troy Murphy (Notre Dame) and Eduardo Najera (Oklahoma).%^$
%^$The award will be presented by the Chip Hilton Sports and the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame at the Final Four at the Hyatt Hotel in downtown Indianapolis, Ind., April 3.%^$
%^$The Chip Hilton Sports series was written for boys and young men between 1948-66 by Clair Bee, the late Long Island University coach and Hall of Famer. The series featured the wholesome exploits of young protagonist Chip Hilton.%^$
%^$Ohio State head coach Jim O’Brien was the 1999 Clair Bee Coach of the Year.
