Junior Michael Redd eclipsed the 500-point scoring mark thisseason with his 21 points vs. ASU. He now has 505 on the year. Heis only the second Buckeye to score 500+ in a season three times.Jerry Lucas is the other. Lucas scored 710 in 1960, 671 in 1961 and609 in 1962. Redd led the Big Ten in scoring as a freshman (21.9ppg.) with 658 points and followed that with a 703-point effortlast year as a sophomore. Ohio State is 19-1 in its first NCAATournament game in 20 appearances. The Buckeyes have not lost theirfirst game in the tournament in the last eight appearances. OhioState is 9-9 in its second game in the tournament. The Hurricanesand Buckeyes have met just twice previously with each team winningone game in the series. Ohio State won the first meeting Dec. 21,1953 when the Buckeyes prevailed 106-81 in Miami. The only othermeeting was a 72-64 Miami win Dec. 27, 1998 in the Orange BowlClassic last year. Ohio State will be playing a Big East team forthe third time this season. The Buckeyes opened the season with a59-57 loss to Notre Dame in the opening round of the Preseason NITin Columbus. The Buckeyes then traveled to New York to face St.John’s Jan. 22. Ohio State came from 10 down with 2:49 to play todefeat the Red Storm 65-64. Ohio State is 50-30 vs. Big East teamsall time. In NCAA Tournament play, Ohio State has compiled a 36-18record all time. Ohio State head coach Jim O’Brien is 10-4 in NCAATournament play, including a 5-1 record at Ohio State. The 26-pointwin (87-61) over Appalachian State is the ties for the thirdlargest NCAA victory for the Buckeyes. The biggest win was a31-point win over Detroit last season (75-44). OSU downedMississippi Valley State by 27 (83-56) in 1992 and St. Joseph’s by26 (95-69) in 1961. Ohio State is 3-0 in Tennessee during NCAATournament play over the last two years. The Buckeyes downed Auburnand St. John’s last year in Knoxville on Tennessee’s campus toadvance to the Final Four. Ohio State senior Scoonie Penn tied hisseason high with five 3-pointers made vs. Appalachian State. In theprocess, he claimed the OSU career lead in 3-pointers made. He nowhas 151 made 3-pointers over the last two seasons. Senior GeorgeReese set a career high with eight assists vs. Applachian State. Healso contributed 19 points, two steals and four rebounds whileconnecting on 9 of 10 free throws in 36 minutes. The Buckeyescombined to score on 9 of 15 attempts from 3-point range. The ninemade treys is the most this season and most since the Buckeyesconnected on 10 of 21 3-pointers vs. Detroit March 13, 1999 in thesecond round of the NCAA Tournament. The Buckeyes have nowconnected on at least one 3-point shot in 249-consecutive games.Ohio State (No. 8) and Miami (No. 23) enter Round Two of the NCAATournament ranked among the Top 25 in the Associated Press poll.The Buckeyes are 3-3 on the year vs. ranked teams.
