Ohio State Fencers Fare Well At NCAA Regional Meet – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio-The Ohio State fencing team travelled to Appleton, Wis. to compete in the NCAA Regional fencing meet. No team scores were kept but the Buckeyes finished with three NCAA Championship Tournament qualifiers. Fane Groes, women’s foil, Alan Jones, men’s epee and Geoffe Kane, men’s epee all received automatic bids to the NCAA Tournament.
Each weapon has two at-large bids in addition to the 22 automatic bids. The Buckeyes have the first-alternate in each weapon except men’s epee and men’s sabre. The at-large bids will be distributed based upon the individual’s seed going into the NCAA Regional, their season record and how they finished at the NCAA Regional.
The men’s epee squad finished with first and fourth place finishes. Alan Jones (Fr., Ft. Leonardwood, Mo.) fished the tournament 11-0 and in first place in men’s epee. Geoffe Kane (Jr., Vancouver, Wash.) finished in fourth with a 6-5 record.
The men’s foil squad had seventh and 10th place finishes. Greg Carlino (Jr., Cleveland Heights, Ohio) finished seventh in men’s foil with a record of 5-6. Kevin Dalley (Jr., Beavercreek, Ohio) placed 10th in men’s foil. He finished the weekend 3-8.
The sabre squad had seventh and eighth place finishes. Joe Wernet (Sr., Bexley, Ohio) finished in seventh place in the men’s sabre and 5-6 overall. Ian Cliffe (Fr., Waukesha, Wis.) placed eighth with a record of 4-7.
The women’s squad was paced by Fane Groes (Jr., Copenhagen, Denmark). She finished in third place in women’s foil with a record of 8-3. Sally Dowding (Jr., W. Midlands, England) placed fifth by finishing 6-5.
The women’s epee squad had seventh and eleventh place finishes. Toya Holland (So., Columbus, Ohio) placed seventh with a 6-5 record. Leah Tracy (So., Wilmette, Ill.) placed eleventh with a 2-9 record.
In the first year of competition for women’s sabre, the Buckeyes finished sixth, seventh and 11th. Sara Bowen (Sr., Trenton, Ohio) finished sixth with a record of 6-5. Lynn El-Hillow (Sr., North Kingston, R.I.) placed seventh with a record of 5-6. Kelly McCafferty (So., Olmstead Falls, Ohio) finished in 11th place with a record of 1-10.
The Buckeyes return to action March 22-26 at Stanford for the NCAA Championships.
