Buckeyes survive Badger defense
There were few style points and not many more baskets, but No. 5 Ohio State still found a way to get past Wisconsin 51-48. Overcoming a five-point deficit with just over 7 minutes left, the Buckeyes won their seventh in a row and 11th in their last 12 games. To do it, they had to weather two Wisconsin 3-point misses in the final seconds. The 51 points matched Ohio State’s lowest point total in a conference win since 1982. Michael Redd scored 14 points and Scoonie Penn added 13 for the Buckeyes, who won despite shooting 37 percent. They hit 12-of-14 free throws, although both misses came in the last 48 seconds. Even though they trailed most of the game, the Badgers controlled the tempo. Tight defense, mixed with chest bumps and hand checks, held down the scoring at both ends. Down as many as seven points in the first half, Wisconsin pulled even at 35 on a free throw at the 13:33 mark by Andy Kowske, who led the Badgers with 14 points and 11 rebounds. The Badgers’ 9-0 run was built on their defense and ball-control offense. Wisconsin took a 40-35 lead on Mike Kelley’s steal and assist on Charlie Wills’ layup and Jon Bryant’s 3-pointer from the right side. The Buckeyes put up their first points since the 15:25 mark when George Reese scored on a backdoor pass from Redd with 7:23 left. After a Wisconsin miss, Penn hit a 15-footer that went through the net while he hit the floor. Ohio State scored its next six points at the line – two apiece by Redd, Penn and Brown – to forge a 45-40 lead and complete a 10-0 run. The Buckeyes led 49-44 after Reese hit a baseline jumper with 2:07 left. But a 3-pointer by Duany Duany with 29 seconds left cut the lead to 50-48. Noting the win over Wisconsin
OSU head coach Jim O’Brien earned his 50th win as the Buckeyementor with the victory over the Badgers. He has a record of 42-12(.778) in the last two years. OSU owns a 12-1 record at Value CityArena this season and a 26-2 record all-time at VCA. Despitescoring 51 points, OSU still pulled out the win. His efforts against Purdue earned him the Big Ten Player of the Week, the first for an OSU player this year. Redd had scored in double figures in 26-consecutive games before the Oakland game. He scored 10 or more in 34-consecutive contests after the BYU game his freshman season. He has reached double digits in his last nine games, including the 14-point effort vs. Wisconsin (2/2/00)
Johnson likely has made final move on OSU career swat chart but…
Ohio State senior center Ken Johnson likely made his final assault on the Buckeye career blocked shots chart with his eight-rejection night against Eastern Kentucky, which moved him into second-place all-time (256) at Ohio State in career blocks. Johnson trails the 328 recorded blocks by Buckeye great Herb Williams (1978-81) by 72. Johnson averaged 1.9 bpg (58/30 gms.) as a sophomore, 2.8 bpg. (100/36 gms.) as a junior and 5.44 bpg. (98/18 gms.) so far this season. If he keeps up his current pace he could still reach Williams’ record. Ohio State has at least 10 games remaining (nine regular season, one in the Big Ten Tournament). Johnson could reach the record on his current pace in 14 games.

Penn could become just the second player to record 1,000 points in his only two seasons as a Buckeye. Brad Sellers (1985-86) was the first to do so with 1,122 points in his career.

Michigan State downs Wolverines in Ann Arbor
Michigan State, favored to win, did. But the Spartans never figured they’d get an assist from the NCAA. Michigan State won its fourth straight as Morris Peterson had 32 points and 10 rebounds in the eighth-ranked Spartans’ 82-62 victory over Michigan. The Spartans were simply bigger, faster and stronger than the predominately freshman Michigan lineup. Mateen Cleaves, playing his eighth game since recovering from a broken foot, had 19 points and six assists for the Spartans. Andre Hutson added 10 points and 10 rebounds for the two-time defending Big Ten champions. It was the third straight loss for the Wolverines, who got 16 points from freshman LaVell Blanchard. This was trademark rough-and-tumble Big Ten basketball, with plenty of bumping, flying bodies and floor burns as the Wolverines tried to hold off the more mature Spartans.
Buckeyes 23-4 when ranked vs. Michigan
Ohio State has taken an Associated Press Top 25 ranking into 27 games against Michigan since 1949. The Buckeyes have come away with a 23-6 record (.852) in those games. The last time Michigan defeated a ranked Ohio State team was in 1992 when the 15th ranked Wolverines won 75-71 over the No. 3 Buckeyes. That game was in the 1992 Midwest Regional Finals in Lexington, Ky.
Wolverines on 3-game losing streak
Michigan started the season 6-0 before ending the non-conference season with a 9-2 slate. The Wolverines then lost to Minnesota (85-68) on the road to open Big Ten play. Michigan then won back to back over time games at Purdue (88-86, 2 OT) and at home vs. Illinois (95-91). Penn, Redd earn preseason Big Ten recognition by both coaches and media
Ohio State senior guard Scoonie Penn was selected as the preseason Big Ten Player of the Year by the league coaches during the conference-sponsored media day.
Michigan State senior Mateen Cleaves was selected by the Big Ten media as its preseason player of the year candidate. Ironically, the coaches tabbed Cleaves the Big Ten Player of the Year at the conclusion of last season while the media selected Penn. Penn along with OSU junior Michael Redd (Columbus, Ohio/West) were both selected as first team all-conference members by both the media and coaches.
The coaches also added Cleaves and Morris Peterson of Michigan State to the first team along with A.J. Guyton of Indiana. The media selected a similar first team but replaced Guyton with Cory Bradford of Illinois. League coaches picked Michigan State to win the conference this year followed by Ohio State, Illinois, Purdue and Indiana. The media picked MSU, Ohio State and Illinois as its top three.
