COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – Boban Savovic and Brian Brown scored 14 points apiece and each powered a 41-8 first-half surge as Ohio State beat Eastern Kentucky 90-44 on Saturday.
Ohio State (3-2), which opened a nine-game homestand, was playing its first game after losing its last two games at the Great Alaska Shootout last week.
Velamir Radinovic added 13 points for Ohio State, hitting 9-of-11 free throws. Zach Williams also had 13 points and Ken Johnson had 11 points.
Phillip Taylor was the only player in double figures with 10 points for Eastern Kentucky (2-2), which lost 72-40 at Ohio State a year ago. Since that game, however, the Colonels have a new coach (former Kentucky point guard Travis Ford) and 10 first-year players who have never played in a Division I game before this season.
Ohio State’s biggest margin was the final score. The Buckeyes dominated the boards 54-32 and shot 46 percent from the field to the Colonels’ 27 percent.
The game was all but over midway through the opening half.
The Buckeyes took the lead for good at 7-6 on a pair of free throws by Sean Connolly. It was Connolly’s 3-pointer at the 2:33 mark that swelled the lead to 46-14 on the way to a 51-16 lead at the half.
The Colonels missed all six of their shots from the field and had six turnovers as Ohio State went on a 16-2 surge. Savovic – who made 4-of-5 3-pointers – hit consecutive 3-pointers and Brent Darby also had a shot behind the arc. After Lavoris Jerry and Clinton Sims scored back-to-back baskets for Eastern Kentucky, Ohio State scored 25 of the next 27 points. Eight Buckeyes scored during that run, led by Brown’s seven points.
Eastern Kentucky had 13 turnovers to Ohio State’s seven in the first half, but those mistakes were turned into a 16-2 advantage by the Buckeyes.
The Colonels finished with 23 turnovers.
Brown also had seven assists and eight rebounds in 32 minutes.
