Men’s Hockey Tops Findlay, 10-0 – Ohio State Buckeyes

Columbus, Ohio – Thirteen different players scored at least one point to lead the Ohio State men’s hockey team to a shutout over Findlay, 10-0, at Value City Arena tonight in a non-conference game. The Buckeyes improve to 8-4-0 on the season, while the Oilers drop to 5-2-1. It was the first meeting between the teams.
Peter Wishloff (So., Oakville, Ontario) recorded the win in goal for the Buckeyes for his first collegiate victory. He and Kelly Holowaty (Fr., Regina, Saskatchewan) shared the shutout, OSU’s second of the season. Wishloff posted 18 saves in 52:38, while Holowaty made one save in 7:20.
Eric Skaug (So., Portland, Ore.) and R.J. Umberger (Fr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) led the Buckeyes with two goals each. Jean-Francois Dufour (Sr., Bedford, Quebec), Dave Steckel (Fr., West Bend, Wis.) and Umberger each had thee points in the game.
The Buckeyes opened the game with two goals in the first period. They improve to a perfect 4-0 on the season when tallying first. The squad scored four goals in both the second and third periods, a season-high for goals in a period.
At the 9:23 mark of the first period, Nick Ganga (Jr., Long Beach, Calif.) put OSU on the board with his seventh goal of the season. Assisting on the power-play goal were Dufour and Luke Pavlas (So., Anchorage, Alaska). At 18:41, it was Dufour who put the puck in the net after he took a pass from Steckel. Steckel extended his scoring streak to six games with the assist. Steckel scored a power-play goal at 5:11 of the second stanza to put Ohio State up, 3-0. Assisting on the play were Scott May (Fr., Surrey, British Columbia) and Andre Signoretti (Sr., Monotick, Ontario). At 7:04, Umberger scored off a pass from Dufour. Then at 8:26, Jason Crain (Jr., Natrona Heights, Pa.) took a pass from Jaisen Freeman (Sr., Mahtomedi, Minn.) for his first goal of the season.
Skaug scored his first goal as a Buckeye at 17:37. Assists on the goal went to Chris Olsgard (Fr., Issaquah, Wash) and T.J. Latorre (So., Naperville, Ill.). The points were the first for each this season.
With the Buckeyes in a four-on-four situation, Signoretti netted a goal of his own at 1:50 to start the third period. Skaug scored his second goal of the evening at 5:41 with assists from Steckel and Paul Caponigri (Fr., Oak Park, Ill.).
At 12:40, Olsgard added a goal, his first collegiate tally, assisted by Crain and Latorre. Umberger finished out the Buckeye scoring with his second of the night at 14:32 on an unassisted play deep in the Findlay zone.
The Buckeyes fired a season-high 50 shots on goal at Findlay goalies Kevin Fines, who made 40 saves, and John Baier, who saw no shots while playing the last 5:28 of the contest.
Ohio State did not allow a goal in six Findlay power play opportunities. The Buckeyes were 2 for 8 on the power play in the game.
The 10 goals the Buckeyes scored in the game were the most since a 10-7 win at Illinois-Chicago Dec. 14, 1991. It also set the record for most goals scored by one team in Value City Arena. The previous high was eight, set three times.
The win marked the Buckeyes’ last home game in Value City Arena before January 2001. The squad travels to Big Rapids, Mich. for two games with CCHA oppenent Ferris State Friday and Saturday. Faceoff is set for 7:-5 p.m. each night.
