No. 10 Women’s Hockey To Play Two Games At MSU, Mankato – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio-The Ohio State women’s ice hockey team (3-5-1 overall, 2-4-1 in the WCHA) tied then No. 5 Wisconsin, 3-3, Saturday night after falling to the Badgers, 2-0 Friday at the OSU Ice Arena.
ON TAP THIS WEEKEND
The Buckeyes now set their sights on Mankato, Minn. and the MSU, Mankato Mavericks (1-9-0 overall, 0-8-0 in the WCHA). The puck drops at 3:35 p.m. EST Friday and Saturday at the Midwest Wireless Civic Center.
“We’re coming off a very solid weekend,” Jackie Barto, OSU head coach said. “Our goal this weekend is to carry the same intensity we had against Wisconsin into the Mankato series. We need to play up to our potential and take care of the little things on the ice. This is a big weekend for us. We want to see two solid games from everyone in the locker room.”
WISCONSIN SERIES RECAP
Saturday, Corinne Rosen scored her fourth goal of the season and picked up an assist and April Stojak recorded 22 saves for an .880 save percentage. At 11:43 in the first period, Lindsey Steblen netted an unassisted power-play goal, her first of the season. Rosen scored on the power-play at 1:43 the second stanza. Kelli Halcisak extended the Buckeyes’ lead to two less than two minutes later.
With 50 seconds remaining in the third period, the Badgers tied the game at three and neither team was able to score in the five-minute overtime period. The Buckeyes converted two-of-two power-play opportunities, for a perfect 100 percent. Stojak picked up 40 saves on the weekend.
Although OSU outshot the UW, 22-20, Friday, the Buckeyes dropped the series opener to the Badgers, 2-0.
BUCKEYES IN THE NATIONAL SPOTLIGHT
In the Top 10 poll released Monday by U.S. College Hockey Online, the Ohio State women’s ice hockey team is ranked tenth in the nation. The Top 10 ranking is the Buckeyes’ second this season. Three other Western Collegiate Hockey Association teams are among the Top 10-No. 2 Minnesota, No. 4 Minnesota-Duluth and No. 6 Wisconsin.
The poll consists of ten voters, all coaches from Division I teams.
Ohio State is ranked No. 10 in the USA Today/American Hockey Magazine poll this week for the first time in program history.
“Without placing a lot of emphasis on the polls, I’m very pleased that our team is ranked in the Top 10,” Barto said. “I think that’s a great step for our program in the direction we want to go.”
HEAD COACH JACKIE BARTO
Jackie Barto enters her second season at the helm of the Ohio State women’s ice hockey program. She was named the first head coach in the program’s history Dec. 14, 1998. Barto led the squad to an 8-26-3 overall record and a 6-15-3 WCHA conference finish in its inaugural season last year. In addition, she coached the Buckeyes in their first-ever postseason tournament, the Western Collegiate Hockey Association Championship. There, the No. 5-seed Buckeyes upset higher seeds No. 4 St.
Cloud and No. 3 Wisconsin to claim third place.
Barto came to Ohio State from Providence College, where she was the head coach of the Friars. Under Barto’s guidance, the PC women’s hockey program flourished, compiling a record of 70-53-10 in her five years at the helm.
SCOUTING MSU, MANKATO
Third-year head coach Todd Carroll led his Mavericks to an 8-25-2 record and a seventh-place finish in the WCHA’s inaugural 1999-2000 season.
Twelve returning letterwinners and fifteen newcomers comprise the 2000-01 MSU, Mankato squad, which sports a 1-9-0 record.
Freshman Amy Egli leads the team in scoring with four assists for four points. Tristan Stephenson (2-1=3) and Ashleigh Miller (1-2=3) round out the top three Maverick scorers.
Returning Co-WCHA Student Athlete of the Year Katie Beauduy and freshman April Vogt have shared goaltending duties for the Mavericks this season. Beauduy has played four games for MSU and has an .891 save percentage and a 3.71 goals against average. In six games, Vogt has amassed an .899 save percentage and a 4.01 gaa.
THE MAVERICKS-LAST TIME OUT
MSU, Mankato dropped two games to the Bemidji State Beavers last weekend. BSU recorded its first series sweep of the season, shutting out the Mavericks, 1-0, Friday and 3-0 Saturday.
THE BUCKEYES-MAVERICKS SERIES
The Buckeyes hold a 4-0-0 series advanage over the Mavericks. The two teams last met Feb. 19, 2000 at Columbus, Ohio. OSU won, 4-2.
Corinne Rosen and Shana Frost lead all Buckeyes in points against MSU, Mankato. Rosen has nine points from two goals and seven assists. Frost has three goals and three assists for six points.

SHE SHOOTS, SHE . . .
In their weekend series with Wisconsin, the Buckeyes were outshot for the first time this season, 45-40.
Currently, OSU is outshooting its opponent, 277-171.
STILL ON A POWER [PLAY] TRIP
Two of three Buckeye goals against Wisconsin Saturday were on the power play as the Buckeyes went 2-for-2 (100%) with the advantage.
As of Nov. 13, Ohio State is fifth in the WCHA in overall power-play percentage, having converted 11-of-50 (22.0%) opportunities.
Last season, OSU converted 17-of-193 power-play opportunities, or 8.8%.
BUCKEYES KILLING PENALTIES
The Buckeyes held the Badgers scoreless through 5-of-7 OSU penalties last weekend.
Ohio State is third in the WCHA in penalty kills, with 29-of-36, or 80.6%.
Last season, OSU led the nation in penalties/minutes (277/573).
ROSEN INCHES TOWARD 100
Corinne Rosen scored a power-play goal Saturday and added an assist. She is tied with Shana Frost for first on the team in scoring with four goals and four assists for eight points. Currently, Rosen is second in the WCHA for game-winning goals with two.
Rosen’s goal and assist move her two points closer to the century mark for career points.
Currently, the former Providence College standout is 48-49=97 in her career, only three points away from 100.
NEW BUCKEYES GET ON THE BOARD
Lindsey Ogren and Melissa Pirie scored their first points of the season Saturday against Wisconsin. Ogren assisted on frosh Kelli Halcisak’s goal in the second period. Pirie also picked up an assist. She shoveled the puck to Corinne Rosen, who netted a power-play goal, also in the second.
Ogren, a Buckeye captain this year, was third on the team in scoring last season, with 10 goals and five assists for 15 points. As a rookie, Pirie scored three goals and assisted on three more for six points.
SOLID STOJAK
Sophomore April Stojak held her own between the pipes for the Buckeyes in the Wisconsin series.
Stojak recorded a season-high 22 saves Saturday, facing 25 Badger shots and earning a .880 save percentage. Friday, Stojak stopped 18 UW shots for a .900 save percentage. She has started all nine games for OSU this season, racking up 542.28 minutes and a 2.77 gaa.
RACKING UP POWER-PLAY POINTS
Emma Laaksonen, known by her teammates as the “Finnish Flash,” is second among all Buckeye freshmen in scoring and is third on the team with four goals and two assists for six points. More importantly, all six of those points have come on the power-play. Laaksonen is second in the WCHA for overall power-play goals.
FRESHMAN FIVE
Of the five freshman Buckeyes who have seen action this season, all five have recorded points. Freshmen account for 21 of 48 total team points–Halcisak leads the pack with seven, Laaksonen has six, Jeanne Chapple follows with three and Erin O’Grady has one.

WCHA CHAMPIONSHIPS
All seven teams in the WCHA will participate in the WCHA Championship, which will be held March 8, 9 and 10, 2001 at Recreation Center in Rochester, Minn.
NCAA GIVES APPROVAL
The NCAA announced Jan. 18, 2000 that its membership adopted legislation to establish an official championship in women’s ice hockey, effective with the 2000-01 season. The 2001 championship will be held March 23-24 at the University of Minnesota’s Mariucci Arena.
CAPTAINS ANNOUNCED
Corinne Rosen, Lindsey Ogren, Melissa Glaser and Emily Hudak have been named captains for the 2000-01 season.
Rosen led the team in goals (16), assists (17) and points (33). Ogren finished third on the team in scoring with 10 goals and five assists, equaling 15 points. She was the lone member of the Buckeye squad to earn a spot on the inaugural WCHA All-Tournament Team. Glaser appeared in 21 games between the pipes last season and averaged 26.4 saves per game. She also carried a 3.20 goals against average and a .895 save percentage. Hudak led the Buckeye defense in goals (6) and assists (6) last season and led the entire team in shots on goal with 143.
ON TAP NEXT WEEKEND
OSU hits the road again, this time traveling to Boston, Mass. and Northeastern University. The two-game non-conference series between the Buckeyes and Huskies will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday-Sunday, Nov. 25-26 at Matthews Arena.
