Men’s Basketball Defeats Marathon, 82-73 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio–The Ohio State men’s basketball team defeated Marathon, 82-73, in exhibition play Monday evening in front of a crowd of 18,391 at Value City Arena at The Jerome Schottenstein Center.
The Buckeyes and Marathon exchanged the lead throughout the first half, with 10 lead changes and eight times when the squads were even.
OSU pulled within one at the half as the first half ended with Marathon leading, 44-43.
Brian Brown (Jr., Brooklyn, N.Y.) led Ohio State at the break with 10 points, while Marathon was led by Curt Smith with 14 points.
The Buckeyes took control of the game early in the second half off two dunks by Ken Johnson (Sr., Detroit, Mich.). Ohio State also got a key 3-pointer from Sean Connolly (So., Peabody, Mass.) to give the Buckeyes an eight-point lead, 58-50.
Ohio State continued to pull away, outscoring Marathon 39-29 after the break.
Johnson led Ohio State with 21 points off 8-of-13 from the floor and 5-of-6 from the free throw line. Brown finished with 16 points off a 6-of-11 shooting performance. As a team Ohio State shot 44.4 percent, including 51.5 percent in the second half.
Connolly and Johnson paced the Buckeyes with nine rebounds each. As a team Ohio State grabbed 50 rebounds, while Marathon pulled down 27.
Marathon’s Smith led all scorers with 23 points off a 9-of-19 shooting performance. Marathon shot 43.3 percent for the game.
The Buckeyes open the regular season against Yale at 8 p.m. Friday at Value City Arena.
