Columbus, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s and women’s fencing teams will play host to the Alumni Exhibition, Saturday, Oct. 7 in Larkins Hall.
The Alumni Exhibition
The Ohio State fencing teams will play host to the Alumni Exhibition at LarkinsHall, Saturday. The event is open to the public and will take place at 10:00 a.m. in the Brown Gym.
Year Two
This is only the second time in about 22 years Ohio State has held the alumni exhibition. Last season, the alumni defeated the current team members, 19-17.
The Coach
Fencing head coach Nazlymov began his quest to develop the Ohio State program last season. Nazlymov led the men’s team to a 14-8 record and the women’s squad to an 18-8 mark. He also guided two Buckeyes, Fane Groes and Geoff Kane, to All-America status.
Before coming to Ohio State, Nazlymov spent eight years as the head coach for the Kansas City, Mo., School District where he designed and developed an Olympic caliber fencing program.
From 1986-1988 Nazlymov served as the USSR National Team’s head coach. The USSR went on to win the gold medal at the 1986 World Championships and silver medals at the 1987 Worlds and 1988 Olympics
Nazlymov was the head coach of the Soviet Union Military Fencing team from 1976-1990. he guided his students to two Olympic gold medals and 12 World Championships, as well as eight European Championship crowns.
While his coaching career is already impressive, Nazlymov also made a tremendous impact on the fencing world as an athlete.
Competing for the Soviet Union, Nazlymov was a three- time Olympic Champion (1968, 1976, 1980). He earned the Olympic silver medal in 1972 and 1976, while notching the Olympic bronze medal in 1972.
The 2000 NCAAs
The men’s and women’s fencing team finished 12th last season at the 2000 NCAA Championships, March 22-26 in Stanford, Calif.
Fane Groes (Sr., Copenhagen, Denmark/Vordingborg) placed seventh in the women’s foil competition and Geoff Kane (Sr., Vancouver,Wash./Columbia River) of the men’s squad finished 11th in epee.
The OSU Schedule
This season, the Buckeyes play host to three events, all in October – the Alumni Exhibition, the OSU Open and the OSU dual meets. The squad will travel to two meets before New Year’s Day. OSU will compete in four events before the Midwest Championships. The NCAA Regionals and Championships will be held in March.
