Men’s Tennis Players Eliminated From Regional Play – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio– The Ohio State men’s tennis team concluded play at the ITA Region-IV tournament at Madison, Wis. Sunday. OSU’s Chris Porter (Sr., Canton, Ohio/Jackson) and Phillip Metz (So., Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) both advanced to the quarterfinal round of the singles draw before falling to nationally ranked opponents.
Metz, the No. 92 player in the collegiate ranks and the No. 16 seed in the tournament, lost to Minnesota’s Tom Haug, the No. 84 ranked player, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4. Metz earned a berth in the quarterfinals after defeating Illinois’ Michael Calkins, 6-3, 6-1, in the fourth round.
Porter, given the No. 9 seed for the weekend, lost to Harsh Mankad of Minnesota, 6-2, 7-5, in the quarterfinals after defeating Northwestern’s Brad Erickson, 6-3, 7-5, in the fourth round. Mankad and Erickson are currently ranked No. 41 and No. 83 in the nation, respectively.
Jonathon Scale (So., Acworth, Ga./Harrison) advanced to the fourth round where he was defeated by Amer Delic of Illinois, 6-3, 6-3. Scale defeated Bart Cordemeyer of Marquette in the third round, 7-5, 6-3, to advance.
In the doubles draw, the team of Derek DeFalco (Sr., Maumee, Ohio/Maumee) and Bob Wellstein (Sr., Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) defeated Wisconsin’s Westerman/Friedman, 8-3, in the third round to earn their spot in the quarterfinals where they lost to the Illinois team of Oliver/Delic, 9-8 (4). Oliver/Delic were the No. 2 seed in the tournament.
Also in doubles, Metz and B.J. Munroe (Sr., Freeport, Bahamas/Freeport) were defeated in the second round by the No. 9 seeded team of Mankad/Duenas, 8-6.
OSU will not compete again until January 13-15 when it travels to Ann Arbor, Mich. for the Big Ten Indoor Championships.
