Johnson, Penn help secure win over St. John’s with final defensive flurry
Scoonie Penn returned to the site of one of his greatest triumphs and helped Ohio State steal a game from St. John’s. Penn scored the final two points of a game-closing 11-0 run and blocked Erick Barkley’s potential winning shot at the buzzer as the 13th-ranked Buckeyes rallied for a 65-64 victory in a rematch of the 1999 NCAA Tournament South Region final. Consecutive 3-pointers by Bootsy Thornton provided the 19th-ranked Red Storm with a 64-54 lead with 2:49 to play before Ohio State fought back to win its second huge game in three days. After Penn made two free throws with 23 seconds remaining, St. John’s worked the ball to Anthony Glover, whose driving attempt was blocked by Ken Johnson. Johnson finished with a career-high and OSU single-game record 11 blocks and moved into seventh place on the Big Ten Conference’s all-time list. The Red Storm grabbed the rebound, however, and the ball found Barkley in the left corner. But his shot was blocked by Penn as time expired. Penn scored 16 points in his first game at Madison Square Garden since claiming MVP honors for Boston College at the 1997 Big East Conference Tournament. He made back-to-back 3-pointers to set up Ohio State’s comeback. The Buckeyes, who were coming off last Thursday’s league victory over No. 10 Michigan State, won their fifth straight.
Noting the win over St. John’s
– Senior center Ken Johnson swatted a school record 11 shots in the win over St. John’s to set an Ohio State record for rejections in a single game. Johnson had nine blocks in the second half, including a block against Anthony Glover’s attempt with six seconds to play. The previous OSU record of nine blocks in a game was held by both Brad Sellers (vs. Louisiana Tech, 3/24/86) and Herb Williams (vs. Iowa, 2/23/80). Johnson set the OSU record on the same court where Williams, who just retired from the N.Y. Knicks, starred.
– Ohio State trailed St. John’s 55-44 with 6:14 to play in the second half before going on a 21-9 run to grind out the victory. OSU scored the last 11 points over the final 2:49. During that final run, St. John’s had four turnovers. Sophomore Boban Savovic recorded two steals in 13 seconds and both Ken Johnson and Scoonie Penn recorded blocks in the final 6.1 seconds. It was Johnson’s 86th of the season and 11th of the game and Penn’s first of the season.
– Ohio State improved to 6-2 in the all-time series with St. John’s.
– Junior Michael Redd’s 15 points moved him into ninth place all time on the OSU career scoring chart. He has scored 1,603 career points in 82 games as a Buckeye (19.5 ppg.). Redd passed Robin Freeman (1,597 pts., 1954-1956) to take the ninth spot. Redd needs 11 points to pass Perry Carter (1,613, 1988-91) for the No. 8 position.
– With six field goals made against St. John’s, Michael Redd moved into the No. 10 position all-time in field goals made at Ohio State. He has made 597 career shots. Redd needs eight field goals to pass Allan Hornyak (604, 1971-73).
– Ohio State has trailed at the half in seven games this season, including a 29-23 deficit vs. St. John’s. The Buckeyes have come back five times to win games after trailing at the half.
– Ohio State head coach Jim O’Brien recorded his 48th win as the Buckeye head coach.
– Sophomore Brian Brown, a Brooklyn, N.Y., native, had another solid game for the Buckeyes with 16 points, five rebounds, six assists and no turnovers. In his last two games, Brown is a combined 12-16 (.750) from the field 2-4 (.500) from 3-point range and 4-5 (.800) from the foul line. He also had 30 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and just three turnovers in 62 minutes.
– Ohio State forced St. John’s to miss 50 shots (21-71, .296). Ohio State has now held 11 of 16 opponents under 40 percent shooting from the field. Five foes have failed to reach 30 percent.
– Ohio State is now 60-55 (.522) all-time in one-point games after the 65-64 win over the Red Storm. The Buckeyes are 19-25 (.432) on the road in games decided by a single point.
– The Buckeyes posted back-to-back wins within three days over ranked opponents last week vs. No. 10 Michigan State (78-67) and No. 19 St. John’s (65-64). The last time the Buckeyes, now 2-2 vs. the ranked this year, downed back-to-back ranked foes was in Knoxville, Tenn., during the 1999 NCAA South Regional when OSU defeated No. 4 Auburn (71-64, 3/18/99) and No. 9 St. John’s (77-74, 3/20/99). OSU was the No. 14 team in the nation at the time. Both of those wins also came over three days.
– The last time OSU won over a ranked team on its home court was at No. 19 Indiana Feb. 17, 1999. The No. 11 Buckeyes escaped Bloomington with a 69-67 win over the Hoosiers.
– Ohio State attempted just 10 free throws, making seven, vs. the Red Storm. That was both the lowest total made and attempted by the Buckeyes this season.
Redd moves to 9th in career scoring
Michael Redd is in 9th place all-time at OSU in scoring with 1,603 career points after a 15 point effort at St. John’s (1/22/00). Redd is just 11 points behind No. 8 Perry Carter (1988-91). Carter ended his OSU career with 1,613 points.
OSU vs. the Top 10
Ohio State played its second Top 10 team of the season against the No. 10 Spartans of Michigan State. The Buckeyes lost 80-67 earlier this season to No. 8 Kansas in Lawrence but ended MSU’s 21-game Big Ten winning streak with a 78-67 victory Jan. 20 in Columbus. All-Time, Ohio State has a 49-99 record against teams ranked in the AP Top 10. OSU defeated No. 9 St. John’s in the South Regional Finals last season in Knoxville to advance to the Final Four. The Buckeyes won that game 77-74.
OSU record when ranked in Top 10
No. 8 Ohio State opened the season ranked No. 4 but fell to No. 15 following a 59-57 loss to Notre Dame in the opening round of the NIT. Ohio State has a record of 186-48 (.795) in games when the Buckeyes are ranked among the Associated Press Top 10 teams in the nation.
Ohio State owns edge in big games
When Ohio State is ranked and plays a ranked opponent, the Buckeyes have a 51-36 record all-time. OSU has taken an Associated Press ranking into games against ranked foes four times this season. Ohio State lost to No. 8 Kansas 80-67 earlier this season on the road before dropping an 80-77 contest to No. 19 Illinois in Champaign. OSU was ranked No. 12 and No. 13 respectively in those defeats. OSU rose to No. 8 this week after a 78-67 win over No. 10 Michigan State and a 65-64 win over No. 19 St. John’s.
Buckeye schedule toughens
Ohio State will play at least six teams ranked among the AP Top 25 this season with the possibility to add a few more down the road. The Buckeyes already met No. 8 Kansas and No. 19 Illinois, No. 10 Michigan State and No. 19 St. John’s. OSU will travel to No. 9 MSU and will play No. 14 Indiana. Michigan and Purdue are getting votes in the AP Top 25 poll. Purdue is currently 26th, Michigan 33rd. Illinois (35th) also is receiving votes and could be back in the Top 25 before the Illini travel to Columbus later this year.
Penn, Redd battle for scoring lead
The Ohio State guard duo of Michael Redd and Scoonie Penn each have lead the Buckeyes in scoring this season. Penn is the current leader with 15.3 points per game. Redd is close at 15.1 ppg. Penn has scored 245 points followed by Redd with 242.
Redd among 30 finalists for Wooden Award, Penn still being considered
Ohio State junior guard Michael Redd is listed among the 30 finalists for the 2000 John R. Wooden Award. Ohio State senior Scoonie Penn is still under consideration but is not listed among the mid-season Top 30.
OSU guards successful at foul line
The OSU guard rotation of Michael Redd, Scoonie Penn, Brian Brown and Brent Darby have been deadly from the foul line this season. Redd has made 36 of 42 shots (.857) followed by Brown (32-38, .842), Penn (53-70, .757) and Darby (11-15, .733). Combined, the four have made 132 of 165 for 80.0 percent accuracy.
Johnson records 200th career block, now 7th on Big Ten list
Buckeye senior Ken Johnson has 244 blocks in his career after swatting an OSU single game record 11 shots in Madison Square Garden against St. John’s. Johnson is just the second Buckeye and the 12th Big Ten player to reach 200 career blocks. Johnson is currently seventh on the all-time Big Ten list for blocked shots. Johnson needs seven more blocks to pass Michigan’s Roy Tarpley (1982-86). Tarpley ended his career with 251 rejections. Herb Williams (1977-81) leads OSU and is fourth all-time among Big Ten players with 328 rejections.

Johnson, Buckeyes leading Big Ten in several categories
Ohio State senior center Ken Johnson is leading Big Ten players in blocks this season. Johnson is sending back 5.38 shots per game with 86 blocks on the year. As a team, the Buckeyes are first among Big Ten teams in scoring margin (+14.4), field goal percentage defense (.357) and blocked shots (7.0). The Buckeyes are second in scoring defense (58.1) and rebound margin (+6.0).
Penn makes 100th career collegiate start vs. Toledo
Ohio State senior guard Scoonie Penn made the 100th start of his career against Toledo (12/22). Penn has started every game in which he has appeared over two seasons at Boston College and two at Ohio State. As an Eagle at BC, Penn started 56 games from 1995-97. To date at OSU, Penn has 52 starts over the last two seasons.
Redd begins another double-figure scoring streak
Ohio State junior guard Michael Redd has appeared in 82 games as a Buckeye. He has failed to reach double figures in scoring just three times, a nine-point effort vs. BYU (12/30/97), an eight-point outing at Michigan (1/16/99) and a career-low four-point outing against Oakland (12/27/99). Redd had scored in double figures in 26-consecutive games before the Oakland game. He scored 10 or more in 34-consecutive contests after the BYU game his freshman season. He has reached double digits in his last seven games, including the 15-point effort at St. John’s (1/22/00)
Johnson likely has made final move on OSU career swat chart
Ohio State senior center Ken Johnson likely made his final assault on the Buckeye career blocked shots chart with his eight-rejection night against Eastern Kentucky, which moved him into second-place all-time (244) at Ohio State in career blocks. Johnson trails the 328 recorded blocks by Buckeye great Herb Williams (1978-81) by 84. Johnson averaged 1.9 bpg (58/30 gms.) as a sophomore, 2.8 bpg. (100/36 gms.) as a junior and 5.38 bpg. (86/16 gms.) so far this season. If he keeps up his current pace he could still reach Williams’ record. Ohio State has at least 12 games remaining (11 regular season, one in the Big Ten Tournament). Johnson could reach the record on his current pase in 16 games.
Redd reaches 1,600 career points, Penn close
The Ohio State guard tandem of senior Scoonie Penn and junior Michael Redd each reached career point 1,500 this season. Redd eclipsed the mark with 19 against American (12/29) and has 1,603 career points, good for ninth on the OSU career list. Penn, who spent two seasons at Boston College, has scored 1,591 career points. Penn tallied 737 while at BC and has 854 at Ohio State.

Wisconsin outlasts Purdue in Madison
Behind a balanced attack that saw five players score at least seven points and a stifling defense that held Purdue to just 28.6 percent shooting, Wisconsin defeated the Boilermakers 55-45 in front of 15,381 fans at the Kohl Center last Wednesday. Mark Vershaw paced the UW with 13 points, including nine in the second half, in 38 minutes. After leading for the entire first half, including a 21-13 advantage with 6:11 remaining, Wisconsin went into halftime ahead 24-22. However, a jumper by Brian Cardinal gave Purdue its first lead of the game, 28-26, at the 17:57 mark. Charlie Wills tied it for Wisconsin a little over a minute later, but Cardinal answered by hitting one out of two free throws to put the Boilermakers up 29-28. That would be Purdue’s final lead of the game. With the victory, Wisconsin improves to 11-8 on the season, 3-4 in the Big Ten. Purdue falls to 13-6, 4-2. Cornell and Cardinal, who entered the game averaging a combined 30.3 points per game.

Penn, Redd earn preseason Big Ten recognition by both coaches and media
Ohio State senior guard Scoonie Penn was selected as the preseason Big Ten Player of the Year by the league coaches during the conference-sponsored media day.
Michigan State senior Mateen Cleaves was selected by the Big Ten media as its preseason player of the year candidate. Ironically, the coaches tabbed Cleaves the Big Ten Player of the Year at the conclusion of last season while the media selected Penn. Penn along with OSU junior Michael Redd (Columbus, Ohio/West) were both selected as first team all-conference members by both the media and coaches.
The coaches also added Cleaves and Morris Peterson of Michigan State to the first team along with A.J. Guyton of Indiana. The media selected a similar first team but replaced Guyton with Cory Bradford of Illinois. League coaches picked Michigan State to win the conference this year followed by Ohio State, Illinois, Purdue and Indiana. The media picked MSU, Ohio State and Illinois as its top three.
Redd, Penn named OSU captains
Senior Scoonie Penn and junior Michael Redd were named team captains during preseason camp. It will be the second season Penn has served in that capacity at Ohio State. He along with seniors Neshaun Coleman and Jason Singleton served last season. Redd will be serving his first season as an OSU captain.

Buckeye senior Scoonie Penn is listed on several first team All-America teams. Some of the publications or preseason pollsters who have deemed Penn among the nation’s best include: Sport Magazine, Athlon Sports, Basketball Times, Street & Smith’s and Blue Ribbon. Lindy’s picks Penn and junior Michael Redd as First Team all-Big Ten Conference selections. Redd has been consistently deemed a second team nomination in most of the preseason publications.
