Buckeyes knock off No. 10 Spartans
Ohio State went to the Final Four last year not apologizing for the fact it was carried on the broad shoulders of Scoonie Penn and Michael Redd. But George Reese scored 19 points in a reserve role as Ohio State knocked off No. 10 Michigan State 78-67 ending the Spartans’ Big Ten winning streak at 21 games. Michigan State had not lost in the conference since the Big Ten opener a year ago, winning its last 15 regular-season games and the conference tournament. The streak was the fourth-longest in Big Ten history. The victory was a sweet payback for Ohio State, which lost its only meeting with the Spartans last year in East Lansing. The teams didn’t meet again through the conference tournament or as each went to the Final Four. Reese, a starter earlier in the year who has been transformed into a sixth man, hit 8-of-13 shots from the field and became the Buckeyes’ go-to man on offense. Penn added 16 points, Redd and Brian Brown each had 14 and Ken Johnson, the nation’s leading shot-blocker coming in, was a factor in the middle with four blocks and eight points. Morris Peterson scored 20 points and had 11 rebounds, Andre Hutson had 14 points, A.J. Granger 11 and Mateen Cleaves 10 for Michigan State. Charlie Bell, the Spartans’ No. 2 scorer at 12.8 a game, got his only basket with 3:24 left and finished with six points. Reese’s free throw with 12:06 left in the half broke a 15-15 tie and Ohio State led thereafter, building margins to 13 points in the second half. Michigan State got as close as 71-65 with 2:11 left after a 6-0 run, capped by Cleaves’ free throw. Redd scored in the lane with 1:55 left and, after Cleaves missed a jumper, Johnson hit two foul shots for a 75-65 lead. Redd moves into OSU Top 10
Michael Redd is in 10th place all-time at OSU in scoring with 1,588 career points. He cracked the OSU Top 10 list in career scoring with 10 points at Northwestern. Redd is just 13 points behind No. 9 Robin Freeman (1954-56). He ended his OSU career with 1,597 points.
OSU vs. the Top 10
Ohio State played its second Top 10 team of the season against the No. 10 Spartans of Michigan State. The Buckeyes lost 80-67 earlier this season to No. 8 Kansas in Lawrence but ended MSU’s 21-game Big Ten winning streak with a 78-67 victory Thursday in Columbus. All-Time, Ohio State has a 49-99 record against teams ranked in the AP Top 10. OSU defeated No. 9 St. John’s in the South Regional Finals last season in Knoxville to advance to the Final Four. The Buckeyes won that game 77-74.
Johnson leads nation in blocked shots
Ohio State senior center Ken Johnson (6-11, Detroit, Mich./Henry Ford) ranks first among NCAA Division I men’s basketball players in blocked shots, according to NCAA statistics (as of 1/19/00). Johnson has rejected 75 shots in 15 games for an average of 5.0 a contest. Myrda Wojciech of Louisiana-Monroe, a 7-0 center from Rzeszow, Poland, is second with 70 blocks in 14 games (5.0 bpg).
OSU among nation’s best in several team categories
The Ohio State defense has limited opponents to 36.2 percent shooting from the field after 15 games. That percentage is good enough to rank fourth nationally in field goal percentage defense, according to NCAA statistics (as of 1/17/00). Ohio State also ranks seventh in scoring defense, holding opponents to 57.7 points per game. The Buckeyes are 14th in scoring margin, outscoring foes by 15.3 points a contest, and rebound margin, grabbing 6.8 more rebounds than opponents.
Ohio State owns edge in big games
When Ohio State is ranked and plays a ranked opponent, the Buckeyes have a 50-36 record all-time. OSU has taken an Associated Press ranking into a three games against ranked foes twice this season. Ohio State lost to No. 8 Kansas 80-67 earlier this season on the road before dropping an 80-77 contest to No. 19 Illinois in Champaign. OSU was ranked No. 12 and No. 13 respectively in those defeats. OSU is No. 13 this week and has a 78-67 win over No. 10 Michigan State.
Buckeye schedule toughens
Ohio State will play at least six teams ranked among the AP Top 25 this season with the possibility to add a few more down the road. The Buckeyes already met No. 8 Kansas and No. 19 Illinois and No. 10 Michigan State. OSU will travel to MSU and will play No. 11 Indiana and No. 19 St. John’s. Michigan and Purdue are getting votes in the AP Top 25 poll and could be ranked by the time OSU travels to Ann Arbor or hosts the Boilermakers. Illinois also is receiving votes and could be back in the Top 25 before the Illini travel to Columbus later this year.
Noting the win over Michigan State
– Ohio State improves to 12-3 overall and 4-1 in the Big Ten, moving into a tie for first place with Indiana while breaking a 10-game losing streak to Michigan State. – The win is OSU’s first vs. a ranked team this season. The Buckeyes are 49-100 all-time against top 10 teams.
– Ohio State now is 9-1 when scoring 70 or more points and 11-1 when its opponent scores less than 70 points.

– The Buckeyes won the battle of the benches, outscoring Michigan State 24-6, as George Reese poured in 19 points for OSU. The Spartans six points tie their low for the season, set vs. South Carolina. The 18-point differential between the teams was the largest vs. MSU this season, besting a 12-point deficit at Arizona.
– Michigan State set VCA opponent records with 22 made and 26 attempted free throws. The previous highs were 17 and 24, respectively, set by Alabama during the 1998-99 season.

Penn makes 100th career collegiate start vs. Toledo

Penn has started every game in which he has appeared over two seasons at Boston College and two at Ohio State. As an Eagle at BC, Penn started 56 games from 1995-97. To date at OSU, Penn has 51 starts over the last two seasons.
Redd begins another double-figure scoring streak
Ohio State junior guard Michael Redd has appeared in 81 games as a Buckeye. He has failed to reach double figures in scoring just three times, a nine-point effort vs. BYU (12/30/97), an eight-point outing at Michigan (1/16/99) and a career-low four-point outing against Oakland (12/27/99). Redd had scored in double figures in 26-consecutive games before the Oakland game. He scored 10 or more in 34-consecutive contests after the BYU game his freshman season. He has reached double digits in his last six games, including the 14-point effort vs. Michigan State (1/20/00).
Johnson likely has made final move on OSU career swat chart
Ohio State senior center Ken Johnson likely made his final assault on the Buckeye career blocked shots chart with his eight-rejection night against Eastern Kentucky, which moved him into second-place all-time (233) at Ohio State in career blocks. Johnson trails the 328 recorded blocks by Buckeye great Herb Williams (1978-81). Johnson averaged 1.9 bpg (58/30 gms.) as a sophomore, 2.8 bpg. (100/36 gms.) as a junior and 5.0 bpg. Seton Hall downs St. John’s
Seton Hall found the inside-outside combination in the same game and it meant a 78-70 victory over St. John’s, snapping the Red Storm’s six-game winning streak. The Pirates went 10-for-21 from 3-point range and Dalembert set a school record with 11 blocked shots as they won for the ninth time in 10 games. No win was as big as this one over a team that had just moved into the Top 25 after beating then-No. 5 Connecticut on the road Sunday. The zone defense that gave Connecticut so much trouble over the weekend didn’t bother the Pirates as Rimas Kaukenas went 4-for-7 from 3-point range and Darius Lane was 3-for-9. Seton Hall used a 19-4 run to take a 35-22 lead with 1:45 left in the first half and was up 35-26 at halftime. St. John’s got within 46-41 with 12:08 left on two free throws by Reggie Jessie but the Pirates responded with a 15-2 run that made it 61-43 with 7:28 to play. St. John’s had just one field goal over a 7:55 span and that bad stretch ended with Anthony Glover scoring on a loose rebound.
Buckeyes 4-1 when ranked vs. St. John’s
Ohio State has taken an Associated Press Top 25 ranking into five games against St. John’s since the series began in 1955. The Buckeyes have come away with a 4-1 record (.800) in those games. The last time St. John’s defeated a ranked Ohio State team was in 1991 when the No. 20 Red Storm won 91-74 over the No. 5 Buckeyes. Ohio State is 1-1 vs. ranked SJU squads. The last Buckeye win over a ranked Red Storm team was March 20, 1999 when the No. 14 Buckeyes downed No. 9 St. John’s 77-74 to advance to the Final Four.
Red Storm winners in 6 of last 7
Prior to suffering a 78-70 lost to Seton Hall Tuesday, St. John’s had put together a six-game winning streak, which included an 82-77 win over No. 5 Connecticut last Sunday in Storrs. After a season-opening loss to Samford (68-60), SJU rattled off six wins before losing to DePaul on the road, 71-65.
Barkley tops SJU offense
Sophomore point guard Erick Barkley, who played with OSU senior Scoonie Penn this summer on the U.S. World University Games gold medal-winning squad, is the leader of the Red Storm offense. He leads the team with 17.5 points a game. He is one of six players on the SJU roster averaging in double figures.
Jarvis in second season at St. John’s
St. John’s head coach Mike Jarvis was one game away from taking the Red Storm to the Final Four last year in his first campaign at SJU. He guided the Red Storm to a 28-9 record but fell to Ohio State in the South Regional Final. His career record is 293-153 in 15 years as a collegiate coach.
The St. John’s series
Ohio State has a 5-2 record over St. John’s since the first game was played Jan. 31, 1955 in New York. Since that first meeting, the two teams have not met in a regular season contest. The last six games have been contested during in-season or postseason tournaments. Ohio State won the first four games against St. John’s before St. John’s won a pair of contests before the two teams met for the right to advance to the Final Four last year. OSU won that game 77-74 in Knoxville, Tenn..

Penn, Redd earn preseason Big Ten recognition by both coaches and media
Ohio State senior guard Scoonie Penn was selected as the preseason Big Ten Player of the Year by the league coaches during the conference-sponsored media day.
Michigan State senior Mateen Cleaves was selected by the Big Ten media as its preseason player of the year candidate. Ironically, the coaches tabbed Cleaves the Big Ten Player of the Year at the conclusion of last season while the media selected Penn. Penn along with OSU junior Michael Redd (Columbus, Ohio/West) were both selected as first team all-conference members by both the media and coaches.
The coaches also added Cleaves and Morris Peterson of Michigan State to the first team along with A.J. Guyton of Indiana. The media selected a similar first team but replaced Guyton with Cory Bradford of Illinois. League coaches picked Michigan State to win the conference this year followed by Ohio State, Illinois, Purdue and Indiana. The media picked MSU, Ohio State and Illinois as its top three.
Redd, Penn named OSU captains
Senior Scoonie Penn and junior Michael Redd were named team captains during preseason camp. It will be the second season Penn has served in that capacity at Ohio State. He along with seniors Neshaun Coleman and Jason Singleton served last season. Redd will be serving his first season as an OSU captain.
Penn, Redd listed on several preseason All-America lists
Buckeye senior Scoonie Penn is listed on several first team All-America teams. Some of the publications or preseason pollsters who have deemed Penn among the nation’s best include: Sport Magazine, Athlon Sports, Basketball Times, Street & Smith’s and Blue Ribbon. Lindy’s picks Penn and junior Michael Redd as First Team all-Big Ten Conference selections. Redd has been consistently deemed a second team nomination in most of the preseason publications.
