COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State Buckeye defense was the main contributor in OSU’s 3-0 win over Ohio before 256 at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
“OU played very well in the beginning of the game,” Walker said. “They had us running around at first, but our playing level changed as the defense stepped up and took control.”
Ohio attempted two scoring possibilities from Casey Hornschmier and Jennifer Burber in the 11th minute, to no avail as Buckeye goalkeeper Amber Barnes (Jr., Fairfield, Ohio) stepped in and took the saves. With the win, Barnes is .5 shutouts away from tying the all-time mark set by Nicole Morris, who was goalkeeper for OSU from 1994-96.
Freshman Lindsay Eckles (Hilliard, Ohio) netted her fourth goal of the season in the 27th minute outmaneuvering Vanessa Dennis. Less than five minutes later, Emily Thorpe (So., Cincinnati, Ohio) shot an unassisted goal into the net.
With seven seconds to go in the match, Mia Katzel (Jr., Ukiah, Calif.) posted a pass to Courtney Nein (So., Middletown, Ohio) for the third goal of the evening, shutting out the Bobcats.
This week the Buckeyes travel to Texas to battle in the GTE Soccer Classic. They will compete against Houston, Fri., Sept. 10, at 1:30 p.m. and Texas A&M Sun., Sept. 12, at 5 p.m.
