Men’s Hoops Players Receive Preseason Recognition – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Preseason recognition continues to mount for Ohio State guards Scoonie Penn (5-10, Sr., Salem, Mass./Salem) and Michael Redd (6-6, Jr., Columbus, Ohio/West).
Penn is among the Top 10 players listed as preseason favorites for the 1999-2000 Naismith College Basketball Player of the Year Award. Redd is listed among the “Best of the Rest” as candidates for the award.
Penn was the third in the preseason voting behind Mateen Cleaves, Michigan State and Khalid El-Amin of UConn. All three led their teams to the Final Four last season.
Others in the Top 10 include Erick Barkley, St. John’s, Ed Cota, North Carolina, Kenyon Martin, Cincinnati, Chris Mihm, Texas, Terence Morris, Maryland, Chris Porter, Auburn, and Quentin Richardson, DePaul.
Other notables listed along with Redd are A.J. Guyton, Indiana, Shane Battier, Duke, Jamaal Magloire, Kentucky, Troy Murphy, Notre Dame and Eric Chenowith, Kansas.
The Naismith Awards program, now in its 32nd year, honors the outstanding college basketball players in the United States. The awards program was founded by the Atlanta Tipoff Club, an organization dedicated to recognizing the achievements of student-athletes in basketball.
Elton Brand of Duke was the recipient last year. Others who have won in the past include: Bill Walton, Larry Bird, Michael Jordan, Patrick Ewing and Christian Laettner.
The winner of the 1999-2000 award will be announced during a special broadcast in March, 2000.
