Michael Redd
How do you feel about being named a captain?
“It is definitely an honor. Ever since I was a little kid I’ve dreamed about being a captain at Ohio State. As far as leadership goes I will just have to be more vocal and help lead the freshmen and sophomores.”
Talk about how good this team can be this year?
“I think we can be real good, it all depends on how hard we work. Last year we had players that had a good work ethic and that will definitely have to continue for us to do well again. I think this could be a great season if we have good leadership and play well as a team.”
Do expect people to be surprised about you this season?
“I think last season we surprised a lot of teams, especially in the Big Ten. This year we are going to be ranked and have a target on our backs especially within the conference.”
With both you and Scoonie on the court how good can this team be?
“Both Scoonie and I have worked all summer to improve our game. We have been working on new moves and lifting weights becoming stronger. I have gained about 10-15 pounds of muscle over the summer from lifting weights. I was 205 last season and now I’m up to 218. Also our trip to Europe helped us prepare. We got to play against top competition and we won the gold medal.”
Scoonie Penn
What did work on over the summer?
“I really didn’t work on one thing more than the other. I tried to work on all aspects of my game. The biggest thing I did was take a break, I didn’t do anything relating to basketball for about three weeks.”
Talk about your role as a captain?
“It is something I feel comfortable doing. I think I am very fortunate that Michael and I get to be captains of this team. We will both have to be the vocal leaders.”
Do you think you will take anyone by surprise this year?
“Definitely not. We play a very competitive schedule this year and we can’t afford to be down for any game. I don’t think any of the guys have the attitude that anyone will take us lightly. We play in one of the most competitive conferences and will be ranked so we will have a target on our backs.” What do you tell the fans about the upcoming season?
“We have great fans who support us 100 percent. They have to be patient just like we do. We plan to take one game at a time and hopefully we can repeat on last season. It also takes a little luck to get back to the Final Four.”
