COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State (6-3 overall, 0-2 Big Ten, tied for ninth), ranked 25th in the USA TODAY/AVCA Coaches Poll this week, faces Indiana (10-1, 1-1, tied for fourth) and Illinois (6-2, 2-0, tied for first) this weekend in Big Ten Conference matches. The Hoosiers come to town Friday, Oct. 1 (7 p.m.) while the Illini contest scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 3 (2 p.m.)
The Buckeyes opened Big Ten play with road losses at Michigan (7-15, 15-13, 10-15, 15-13, 18-20) and Michigan State (15-8, 6-15, 10-15, 5-15).
FAMILY FOUR PACK NIGHT FOR INDIANA
Friday’s Indiana match is Family Four Pack. Four tickets, four hot dogs, four cokes and a box of popcorn can be purchased for $16.
WNCI NIGHT FOR ILLINOIS MATCH
The Sunday match against Illinois will feature free admission for everyone 18 and under. The WNCI Morning Zoo will be on hand to give away two pairs of tickets to the Backstreet Boys Concert.
ILLINI MATCH ON DELAYED CABLECAST
Insight Communications will delay cablecast the Illinois match locally on Insight Communications Ch. 36 and Time Warner Ch. 24. The match will be carried Tuesday, Oct. 5 and Wednesday, Oct. 6 at 7 p.m. Randy Rhinehart will call the action with former Ohio State All-American setter Audrey (DiPronio) Flaugh providing the color.
SNOW NEARS 1,000 KILLS
With a combined 55 kills last weekend (32 vs. Michigan and 23 vs. Michigan State), Rosie Snow now has 995 career kills. Snow moved into 10th place on the OSU career kill list passing Lisa Vitali (1986-89) who had 978 and Julie Chellevold (1988-91) with 987.
DOUBLE-FIGURE KILL STREAK CONTINUES
Rosie Snow extended her consecutive streak of double-figure kill matches to 30 with her 32 against Michigan and 23 against Michigan State. She now has 47 double-figure kill matches in her career.
SNOW’S 32-KILLS HER 2ND BEST EVER
The 32-kill performance by Rosie Snow against Michigan ranks as her second highest kill total of her career. Snow’s career-high is 36 against Purdue in 1998. She has had one other 30-plus match, a 31-kill display at Florida in the second round of the NCAA Tournament last season.
BUCKEYES OPEN BIG TEN PLAY 0-2
Ohio State’s Big Ten opening losses at Michigan and Michigan State seem to be the norm for the Buckeyes in the last several years. This marks the fourth- consecutive season OSU has opened the Big Ten losing at least the first two matches. In 1998 OSU opened the Big Ten season with road losses at Penn State (0-3) and at Minnesota (1-3) and finished 15-5 for third place in the Big Ten. The Buckeyes lost home matches to Penn State (0-3) and Indiana (1-3) in 1997, finishing 13-7 for third place. In 1996 OSU lost at Wisconsin (0-3) and at Minnesota (0-3) finishing 9-11 for fifth place. Only in 1997 did the Buckeyes lose its third match of the season, an 0-3 loss at Minnesota.
LOOKING AT THE BUCKEYES
Ohio State, offensively, is led by Rosie Snow who averages 4.70 kills (155) per game. Dana Stearns ranks second in kills at 3.16 (101) per game. Stearns has the top hitting percentage (among the hitters) on the squad at .317. On the serve, Jen Flynn has a team-high 11 (.34) aces with Snow and Katie Virtue, nine each. Defensively, Sue Calligaris has a team-high 23 (1-22) kills for a .85 per game average. Suzie Stiling, 21 (3-18), .70 and Stearns, 21 (2-19), .66 are tied for second in blocks. The squad leader in digs is Snow with 80 for a 2.42 per game average. Flynn ranks second with 74 digs, a 2.31 average. Running the offense has been split between Flynn and Virtue. Flynn has 172 assists, a 5.41 average while Virtue has 315 assists, an 11.67 average.
As a team Ohio State is hitting .254 and averaging 17.70 kills per game. OSU averages 1.82 blocks, 13.42 digs and 1.58 aces per game. Buckeye opponents are hitting .191 and average 13.55 kills. Opponents average 2.17 blocks, 11.36 digs and 1.09 aces per game.
DRAEGER CONNECTS FOR CAREER HIGH
Shelly Draeger posted a career-high 18 kills at Michigan last weekend. Her previous high had been 16 at Loyola Marymount. Draeger followed her 18 kills with 17 at Michigan State the next evening. She has now had four matches with double-figure kills.
CALLIGARIS DIGS TO CAREER HIGH
Sue Calligaris recorded 14 digs at Michigan State to set a career-high. Her previous high was 12 at Akron. She also recorded five assist blocks against the Spartans to raise her season total to team-high 23 total blocks.
FLYNN SETS AND DIGS
Jen Flynn moved back to the setter position midway in the Michigan match, recording 48 assists, eight kills and a season-high 16 digs. She then started at setter against Michigan State picking up a season-high 55 assists. Katie Virtue, who started against Michigan, is expected to start this weekend against Indiana and Illinois.
INJURY UPDATE
Brianne Spiers suffered a knee injury during the Michigan match. The possible meniscus tear will be checked out this week. Spiers status for the upcoming weekend is undetermined.
Laura Stalling suffered an ankle injury in practice prior to the beginning of the season and has seen no action to date.
STEARNS BLOCK TOTALS GOING UP
Dana Stearns picked up three assist blocks on the weekend and now has 228 career assists and 247 total blocks. She needs three assist blocks to pass Sara Daniel (1991-94) who is seventh on the OSU career assist list with 230. Stearns needs four total blocks to move past Daniel (250) into ninth place on the career total blocks list.
FLYNN NOW 11TH IN CAREER DIGS
Jen Flynn picked up 21 digs last weekend to raise her career total to 952. She moved into 11th place on the OSU career list passing Tricia Stragliotto (1993-95) with 940 and Marlene O’Brien (1983-86) with 942.
FLYNN TIES FOR 12TH IN TOTAL BLOCKS
Jen Flynn added four assist blocks to her career total and now has 228 total blocks. She moved into a tie for 12th place on the OSU career list with Audrey DiPronio (1988-90).

OHIO STATE FALLS 3-2 TO MICHIGAN
Despite a 32-kill performance by Rosie Snow, Ohio State dropped its Big Ten opener at Michigan in five games. The 15-7, 13-15, 15-10, 13-15, 20-18 Wolverine win went to the wire as both teams had match-point opportunities in game five. OSU’s Shelly Draeger added 18 kills and Dana Stearns 10 in the two hour, 20-minute match. UM’s Alija Pittenger had a team-high 20 kills with Joanna Fielder adding 17 and Nicole Kacor 16.
Ohio State needed two game points in game four to send the match to the rally scoring fifth game. The game stayed close with Ohio State serving for the match at 15-14, 16-15 and 17-16. After ties at 17 and 18, Michigan took a 19-18 lead on an OSU service error and won the match off a block by Fielder and Shannon Melka.
Team statistics had Michigan outhitting OSU .202 to .180, outblocking the Buckeyes, 15 to six and having the advantage in ace serves, 10 to six. Ohio State had a 91 to 69 advantage in kills and a 74 to 64 edge in digs.
MICHIGAN STATE TOPS OHIO STATE 3-1
Despite OSU winning game one 15-8, the Spartans controlled the rest of the match winning the next three games, 15-6, 15-10, 15-5 and the match. Rosie Snow scored a match-high 23 kills for OSU with Shelly Draeger adding 17 and Dana Stearns 10. Snow’s 23-kills marked her 30th consecutive match with double-figure kills. MSU’s Sarah Gustin had a team-high 19 kills for the Spartans with Erin Harley adding 16 and Jessica Sanborn 14. Michigan State received a nine blocks (1-8) performance from Angela Morley and 14 digs from Maren Witzel. Buckeye Sue Calligaris had a career-high 14 digs and Rosie Snow added 12.
Michigan State hit .326 for the match to .189 for OSU. The Spartans outblocked OSU 15 to eight, outdug the Buckeyes 53 to 48 and had a seven to four advantage in aces. Ohio State held a slim 65-63 edge in total kills.
OSU RANKED 25TH IN POLL
In the USA TODAY/AVCA coaches poll, the Buckeyes are 25th this week. OSU has been ranked in the USA TODAY/AVCA Poll for the last 10 years. The Buckeyes are not ranked in this week’s Volleyball Magazine poll.
HEAD COACH JIM STONE
Jim Stone is in his 18th year at Ohio State. He has a 387-172 (.692) record with the Buckeyes and is 219-91 (.706) in Big Ten play. His squads have won Big Ten championships in 1989, 1991 and 1994 and in the last 10 years has only finished below third once. In the championship years, he was named the Big Ten Coach of the Year and in 1991 was the Volleyball Monthly Coach of the Year. For the last 10 years, OSU has participated in the NCAA Championships, advancing to the national semifinals in 1991 and 1994. Stone’s coaching career record includes three years at Wyoming (1979-1981). His 21-year career record is 437-214 (.671).
THE DEAN OF THE BIG TEN COACHES
Head coach Jim Stone begins his 18th-year in the Big Ten at Ohio State. Closest to Stone is Mike Hebert of Minnesota who is entering his 17th season. He spent 14 years at Illinois and the last three at Minnesota.
TELEVISION COVERAGE
The Buckeyes are scheduled for eight televised matches this season. OSU’s Nov. 5 match at Illinois will be carried by ESPN2. Broadcast of the match will be Nov. 7 at 2 p.m. Eastern. Ohio State also will take part in the Fox Sports Chicago Big Ten package. OSU’s match against Michigan Nov. 14 will be broadcast at 5 p.m. Eastern that day.
Ohio State also will have six matches carried by local cable. Insight Communications will broadcast by tape delay the Temple match Sept. 21 and 22, Illinois Oct. 5 and 6, Iowa Oct. 24 and 26, Penn State Oct. 28 and 29, Michigan State Nov. 13 and 14, Wisconsin Nov. 28 and 29. The matches will be replayed at 7 p.m. on Insight Communications (Ch. 36) and Time Warner (Ch. 24).
NEW LOOK FLOOR AT ST. JOHN ARENA
After 42 years of having a basketball floor painted on the floor of St. John Arena, a new look greets the 1999 season of volleyball. Earlier this year, the floor of St. John Arena was sanded down to removed the basketball court markings. In its place is a painted volleyball court for use by the women’s and men’s teams.
BUCKEYES MAKE THE GRADE
Ohio State had four student-athletes honored by the Big Ten for their academic standing. Angelee Abbring, Jen Flynn, Laura Stalling and Dana Stearns were honored as Academic All-Big Ten selections. In addition, six players were honored as Ohio State Scholar-Athlete Award Winners. Included with the four players listed above were freshmen Erin Baker and Carey Cavanaugh.
NATIONAL TEAM CONNECTION
Former Buckeye Laura Davis (1991-94) continues in volleyball as a member of the United States National team. She plays the libero position, a back-row only player. Davis, a two-time All-American, was the 1994 National Player of the Year. Jenny Jackson (1992-95), a member of the national team for the past several years left the team earlier this year to pursue a career in engineering. Jackson was a 1994 All-American and a three-time All-Big Ten selection.
IN THE PROFESSIONAL RANKS
Two former OSU players, Tricia Stragliotto (1993-95) and Vanessa Wouters (1996-97) are currently playing professionally in Europe. Stragliotto, a 1995 All-American and a three-time All-Big Ten pick is playing in Italy while Wouters, a 1995 All-American and the Big Ten Player of the Year is playing in Germany.
HOLLY O’LEARY ENTERS HALL OF FAME
Former Buckeye Holly O’Leary (1987-90) of Cincinnati, Ohio was inducted into the Ohio State Sports Hall of Fame on Sept. 10. A two-time all-American, O’Leary was the 1989 Big Ten Player of the Year and helped OSU win the 1989 Big Ten Championship. She will join former players Mary Ormsby (1977-80), Lisa Bettio (1982-85) and Karen Alsbrooks (1976-79) in the Hall of Fame.
NCAA HISTORY
Ohio State has appeared in 10-consecutive NCAA Championships. The Buckeyes have advanced to the regional level seven times and twice (1991 and 1994) has reached the national semifinals. Overall the Buckeyes have a 13-10 (.565) record in NCAA play. OSU’s trips to the national semifinals included regional championship wins over Nebraska and Long Beach State on their courts.

The Hoosiers look to Amanda Welter for offense and defense. She averages a team-high 4.55 kills and a .353 hitting percentage. Welter tops the team in aces (12, .32) and is second in digs (76, 2.00) and blocks (34, .89). Ryann Connors has 115 kills and has a 4.79 per game average. Cydryce Carter leads the defense with 98 digs (2.58) and a team-high 42 blocks (1.11). Carter is second in aces with 10 (.26). Quarterbacking the offense has been Laura Gardner and Kristina Sanderson. Gardner has 199 assists (11.71) while Sanderson has 340 (13.08).
Indiana is hitting .260 as a team and averages 17.97 kills per game. IU averages 1.92 blocks, 15.37 digs and 2.16 aces per game. Hoosier opponents are hitting .152 and average 13.18 kills per game. They average 2.50 blocks, 13.84 digs and 1.16 aces per game.

Ohio State leads the series with Indiana 28-16. The squads have split matches the last two years. Ohio State has won 17 of the last 20 matches and has won none of the last 10 at home. The Illini attack is coming from Shandia Haddad and Betsy Spicer. Haddad is averaging 3.31 kills per game on 96 kills and Spicer has a 3.21 average on 93 kills. Spicer has a team high 37 blocks (1.28) while Haddad is second with 24 (.83). Lydia Gard is the team’s top percentage hitter at .368. Defensively, Tracy Marshall has 78 digs (2.69) and Sara Sorrell 76 (2.62). Annie Stoessel is the team’s top server with eight aces and Melissa Beitz is second with seven. Betz runs the offense and is averaging 12.38 assists on 359 sets.
Illinois is hitting .237 and averages 15.59 kills per game. The Illini average 2.52 blocks, 14.31 digs and 1.14 aces per game. Opponents are hitting .193 and average 14.07 kills. They average 2.45 blocks, 12.69 digs and 1.00 aces per game.
