COLUMBUS, Ohio-Jim O’Brien, Ohio State head men’s basketball coach, announced today that senior Scoonie Penn (Sr., G, Salem, Mass./Salem) and junior Michael Redd (Jr., G, Columbus, Ohio/West) were named captains for the 1999-00 season.
O’Brien said the two players have demonstrated the qualities necessary to become an OSU captain.
“We are happy to announce Scoonie and Michael as our captains this year,” O’Brien said. “Both players have demonstrated outstanding skills as players but even more impressively as leaders and people away from basketball.”
For Penn, who is listed on numerous preseason first team all-America teams, it will be his second season as team captain. He was chosen to hold that position last year before ever playing a minute at Ohio State.
Redd, who also is regarded as on of the top guards nationally in several preseason publications, will be serving his first stint as an OSU captain.
The guard tandem, considered to be one of the top guard combinations in the country this year, led the Buckeyes to the 1999 Final Four with a 27-9 overall record and a second-place (12-4) record in the Big Ten a year ago.
Redd has led the team in scoring in each of the last two seasons. He led the Big Ten Conference in scoring as a freshman (21.9 ppg.) becoming the first true freshman ever to accomplish that feat. He paced the Buckeyes last season with 19.5 ppg. Redd has scored 1,361 career points in just two seasons at OSU. He ranks 18th all time in scoring and became the second fastest Buckeye to reach 1,000 points (just 49 games).
Penn averaged 16.9 points and 4.3 assists while setting an OSU record with 88 3-pointers made last season.
