DAYTON, Ohio – Ohio State guards Michael Redd (So., Columbus, Ohio/West) and Scoonie Penn (Jr., Salem, Mass./Salem) made the 12-player roster that will compete for USA Basketball at the World University Games in Palma De Mallorca, Spain July 3-12.
Redd said he was excited about playing overseas for the second time in two years.
“It feels great,” Redd said. “I would never have thought that I would make this team and we would go to the Final Four. It’s a great feeling right now to be around great players. It’s going to be hot, it’s going to be different. I went overseas last year (with teammate Scoonie Penn to the Acropolis Cup Tournament) to Greece so I know that it’s going to be different. I’ll probably miss home a little bit but it should be a good experience. To play against different players helped me out last year and not I know what to expect a little bit.”
Penn likes the idea of playing against quality competition.
“This ranks at the top,” Penn said. “It’s always an honor to be a part of something when you represent the USA. To make the team of 12, it’s a great honor. I’m looking forward to the experience and being with the type of guys who are on this team and getting to play against the competition that will be over (in Spain).”
The squad will depart from Dayton, Ohio Tuesday. The U.S. will begin play Saturday against South Korea in preliminary play. The U.S. squad will then face Nigeria, July 4, the Czech Republic, July 5, Lithuania, July 7, and Greece, July 8.
Quarterfinals will be held July 10, semifinals July 11 and medal round games July 12.
The other 10 players on the US roster are Erick Barlkey, St. John’s, Cory Bradford, Illinois, Chris Carrawell, Duke, Kevin Freeman, Connecticut, Brendan Haywood, North Carolina, Mark Madsen, Stanford, Kenyon Martin, Cincinnati, Pete Mickeal, Cincinnati, Chris Mihm, Texas and Matt Santangelo, Gonzaga.
The team will be coached by Oliver Purnell of Dayton. Assistant coaches are Jay Harrington of Belleville (Ill.) Area College and Dan Monson of Gonzaga.
