COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State synchronized swimming team posted wins in the duet and solo events at the U.S. Collegiate Championship, but it was not good enough for the title as Stanford edged the Buckeyes 92-91 in San Diego, Calif. The Cardinal notched victories in the solo and team events to secure its second consecutive national title win. Stanfords Vanessa Shaw led the way with a 94.467 score in the solo event for first place and helped her team score a 98.217 in the team event for the win. Their win in the team event would be a first ever for the Cardinal in the events 23-year history and would clinch the championship for Stanford.%^$
Carolina Moraes (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Isabela Moraes (Fr., Sao Paulo, Brazil) kept the Buckeyes within distance with their victory in the duet event (96.733). Mary Hofer (Fr., Spring Valley, Calif.) teamed with the Moraes twins and captured the trio title with a mark of 95.067. However, using a complex point system, Ohio State would lose out to Stanford by only one point, one of the closest margins in U.S. Collegiate Championship history.%^$
Ohio State had eight swimmers named 1999 All-Americans: Mary Hofer, Denise Martinez, Stephanie Johnson, Alia Arbas, Beth Kreimer and Katie Edwards.%^$
The Buckeyes will now get ready for the U.S. Senior National team trials in April 25 in New York, N.Y.%^$
