Fencers Take Third at Midwest Championships – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio State fencing team took third place at the Midwest Fencing Conference Combined Team Championships, held at Notre Dame on Saturday. OSU’s 610 total points trailed only Notre Dame (725) and Northwestern (630).
The team scores were a combination of the men’s and women’s team scores. The men finished fourth out of 11 teams, scoring 340 points. Notre Dame, the No. 2 team in the nation, easily snared the men’s title. The OSU women’s team garnered third place after tallying 270 points. They fell just short of Northwestern and No. 4 Notre Dame, who shared the title with 275 points.
On Sunday, the Midwest Fencing Conference Individual Championships were held. The top four in each weapon category earned first team all-conference honors, while the next four took second team all-conference accolades. Those in ninth through 12th place took home honorable mention honors.
In the men’s epee, Jeff Carlino (Sr., Cleveland Heights, Ohio) took home first-team honors after finishing in fourth place. Teammate Chad Steinhausser (Sr., Stoutsville, Ohio) placed 10th in the men’s epee and earned an honorable mention nod, while Greg Carlino (So., Cleveland Heights, Ohio) won honorable mention accolades after snaring 10th place in the men’s foil.
Spela Pirc (Sr., Ljubljana, Slovenija) earned second team all-conference honors after finishing sixth in the women’s epee, while teammate Toya Holland (Fr., Columbus, Ohio) finished in 10th in the epee and nabbed honorable mention honors. In the women’s foil, junior standout Yelena Kalkina (Almaty, Kazakhstan) earned first-team all-conference honors after taking third place. Fane Groes (So., Copenhagen, Denmark) just missed joining Kalkina on the first team, as she finished in fifth place in the women’s foil and earned second-team recognition.
Both squads return to action Saturday at the NCAA Regionals at Cleveland State.
