IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – Scoonie Penn scored 24 of his 27 points in the second half and Michael Redd added 22 points Saturday night as No. 13 Ohio State rallied to beat No. 19 Iowa 73-69 for its fourth straight victory.
Jason Singleton finished with 11 points for the Buckeyes (19-6, 9-3 Big Ten), who broke a 10-game losing streak to the Hawkeyes while keeping pressure on league-leading Michigan State, which played later Saturday at Minnesota.
Jacob Jaacks scored 14 points and grabbed 15 rebounds for Iowa (16-7, 7-6), which hit just 21 of 39 free throws and was 4-of-19 on 3-pointers. Joey Range finished with 13 points and J.R. Koch 11 for the Hawkeyes, who were playing without the injured Sam Okey and Jess Settles.
A 3-pointer by Penn at the top of the key, one of his six for the game, gave the Buckeyes a 58-56 edge, their first lead of the second half, with 5:26 to play.
Iowa had led 46-36 after opening the second half with a 19-9 run, with Range accounting for nine points.
After Penn’s long-range shot, Kent McCausland nailed a jumper from the left wing to give Iowa a 60-58 lead with 4:30 remaining.
Neshaun Coleman buried a 3-pointer from the left corner for a 63-60 Ohio State lead with 3:32 to play. A leaning shot in the lane by Redd made it 65-60 with 2:11 remaining.
The Hawkeyes battled back, with Koch hitting one of two free throws to slice the Buckeyes’ lead to 65-64 with 1:37 remaining. Redd answered with a free throw and then sank a 3-pointer from the right corner for a 69-64 lead with 42.1 seconds left.
A 3-pointer by Jaacks brought Iowa to within 69-67 with 23.1 seconds before Penn answered with two free throws. Dean Oliver went the length of the court for a layup to cut Ohio State’s lead to 71-69 with 17.6 seconds left, but Penn nailed two more free throws to sew up the game with 15.5 seconds remaining.
Redd and Penn combined to score 32 of Ohio State’s last 37 points as the Buckeyes also shot horribly – 38 percent from the field, including 9-of-22 3-pointers, while making only 18 of 30 free throws.
