COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State head coach Lori Walker has announced that seven women’s soccer players have signed national letters-of-intent to continue their education at OSU, including four of the Midwest’s premier prospects. “Losing only one starter to graduation this year gave us a unique opportunity,” said Buckeye head coach Lori Walker. “We were able to focus our recruiting on players who would make an immediate impact. Each player has already succeeded at the highest levels, and have the experience and talent to help the Buckeyes reach the NCAA Tournament.”
Lindsay Eckles
A central midfielder and forward at Hilliard Davidson High School, Eckles has been recognized as one of Ohio’s top players throughout her career. She is an active participant in the Olympic Development Program, has been a member of the Midwest Region team for the past four years, and was selected to the national team player pool in 1996. Her club team, Ohio Premier, captured the State Cup title in 1997 and holds numerous tournament championships from around the country. Eckles’ powerful shot and knack for scoring will help the Buckeyes in their quest for a Big Ten title.
Kiley Enmark
Kiley Enmark comes to the Buckeyes as one of the region’s most outstanding players. She led her Henry Ford II High School (Sterling Heights, MI) team in scoring the past two years and received all-state honors in 1997. Her club team, the Michigan Hawks, has won the state championship three of the last four years, and advanced to the National semi-finals in 1997. Enmark has represented the Midwest Region in the Olympic Development Program for the last four years and brings with her great vision and savvy enhanced by international playing experience.
Jen Miller
Jen Miller comes to OSU from Centerville High School where she captained the team from the sweeper position. Miller is expected to mentor at sweeper under the tutelage of returning senior Maria Jimenez, as well as contribute as a flank defender. Miller was honored as one of the country’s top 130 prospects last year as a participant in the adidas ESP talent identification camp. A gifted student academically, she was also recruited by the Honors Program and the Engineering Department.
Elizabeth Moore
Elizabeth Moore, a teammate and co-captain of Miller’s at Centerville High School, has the reputation of being the toughest defender in the state. Her ability to mark the state’s top strikers out of a game garnered her an NSCAA All- America selection and Division I MVP honors for the state of Ohio. Moore competed with the Hammer Football Club out of Cincinnati and is expected to add to the Buckeyes’ strong defense.
Michelle Besson
A standout forward at the Miami Valley School, Besson broke the school’s scoring record though only participating in high school soccer her junior and senior years. A fast player with a strong shot, Besson will augment the OSU squad from both the forward and flank midfield positions. Besson played her club ball at F.C. Dayton, where one of her teammates was fellow future Buckeye Jen Miller.
Anna Mitchell
The Buckeyes spent the 1998 season with only one goalkeeper, so Anna Mitchell of Massillon Jackson H. S. is a welcome addition to the team. Mitchell’s club team, the Internationals, captured four-straight state championships and was National Indoor Champion in 1996, 1997, and 1998. Mitchell will put her lightning quick reactions to work as she joins junior Amber Barnes in the nets.
Jessica Sturgeon
Another defender staying close to home is Jessica Sturgeon. A top student at Dublin Scioto High School, she is known for her intelligent play and ability to strike the ball long distances with either foot. Sturgeon’s club team, COSA Express, was coached by former Ohio State men’s coach Al Bianco.
