Ohio State head coach Jim O’Brien
“This was probably the best game we played all season, and it had nothing to do with the score. Our guys played hard. They had good energy tonight. This game gave our younger players the opportunity to get some good playing time.
“I like having George (Reese) come off the bench. It makes Cobe more relaxed and gives us an experienced sixth man off the bench.
“We are going to give our guys some time off before we start preparing for the Big Ten. This will give some of our injured players some time to rest and heal.”
Ken Johnson
“It is my job to block and rebound.
“I wanted to play hard and pick it up on defense. It feels good to block a shot and it gives me more confidence. Now we can start focusing on the Big Ten season. We have four more days to prepare.”
Michael Redd
“Ken is amazing. He has stepped his game up a notch this season. He is and will continue to be a force.
“The Big Ten is strong again. We have to go out and compete in every game. It is going to be a war and we will have a target on our back.”
Scoonie Penn
“The inside is going to be the key to the Big Ten. Kenny will have to continue to step up like he did in the nonconference.
“Tonight’s game was good because the young guys got to play.”
American head coach Art Perry
“I was hoping not to start the new year this way. I’m disappointed with my team’s approach to the game. Jim’s team came out at the start and jumped on us and we never recovered. “We played with a little heart in the second half. We didn’t do a good job of handling the situation with Johnson inside blocking the shots.”
