Ohio State head coach Jim O’Brien
“It is an understatement to say we were tested. Coastal Carolina did an unbelievable job tonight and credit goes to them.
“I told the team tonight that Coastal Carolina’s philosophy would be to shoot 30 three-pointers and would be able to make 13 of them. It is ironic that they shot 30 of them and made 14. That is a huge, huge credit to them.
“I thought we guarded them well, but they were able to bank in those shots.”
“The difference for us was our free-throwing and Brian Brown. They just dared Brian to shoot the ball, and he did.
“This game was very similar offensively to Notre Dame. We did not shoot well tonight, but unlike Notre Dame we eked by. We need to be more patient and explore other shots. Tonight we lost some patience with our shooting. We can’t give up.”
Brian Brown
“I am shooting with confidence and I am going to continue. We weren’t looking at Kansas. We will look at them tomorrow. Coach warned us about their threes. We played good defense, but they hit some big shots.”
Scoonie Penn
“We weren’t looking at Kansas. These guys were tough and they hit a lot of threes. This was a good wake-up call to get us ready for Kansas.”
Coastal Carolina acting head coach Baker Neal
“We’re very pleased with our kids, and I told them that in the lockerroom. We stuck to our gameplan. We watched the Notre Dame game and we watched two of the best guards in America. We felt that Penn and Redd could really hurt us by penetrating. We were smaller than they were, and we wanted good shot selection and not to get in a racehorse match with OSU.
(On three-point shooting) “I felt like we could have great spacing and get dribble penetration and kick it out. We work on spot-up shooting every day in practice.
“Matt Gladieux is one of the hardest-working players I’ve ever worked with.”
