Ohio State improves to 3-1 after its 99-47 win over Florida A&M – the first-ever meeting between the two schools. FAMU drops to 1-5 with the defeat. OSU is unbeaten all-time vs. the Mid-Eastern Atlantic Conference at 6-0. The Buckeyes return to action Monday night vs. Coastal Carolina, who dropped a 104-79 contest to unbeaten Dayton tonight.
The 52-point win is OSU’s largest since a 61-point triumph (114-53) over Howard on Dec. 14, 1991. Ohio State tied the Value City Arena of 99 points, set last season vs. Florida Atlantic (12/17/98). The win was OSU’s largest ever at VCA.
OSU has held all four of its opponents under 60 points this season. The last time Ohio State held four-consecutive opponents under 60 points was in 1981 when the Buckeye defense held nine opponents, all wins, below 60 from Dec. 15, 1981 to Jan. 14, 1982.
OSU held the Rattlers to 16.2 percent field goal shooting in the first half and 22.4 percent shooting for the game.
Five OSU players – George Reese, Brian Brown, Doylan Robinson, Cobe Ocokoljic and Will Dudley – set career highs in points in the victory.
Ohio State has now connected on at least one three-point field goal attempt over the last 224 games. Scoonie Penn extended the streak with a trey early in the first half. Penn has extended the streak in each of the last three games.
With his 17-point performance, Michael Redd moved into 17th place on the all-time Ohio State scoring chart with 1,423 points, climbing past Larry Borden (1,408). Redd stands 13 points behind 16th-place Paul Ebert. Redd also recorded his first blocked shot of the season. He had two blocks last year and three in 1997-98.
Ken Johnson blocked seven shots in the contest, tying a career high, which he now has set four times in his career. Third on the all-time blocked shots chart with 177, Johnson stands 10 blocks behind second-place Brad Sellers (187). Johnson also grabbed 11 rebounds, tying the OSU record at VCA, set by Johnson (1/9/99 vs. Indiana) and Redd (12/4/99 vs. Duquesne).
OSU’s 54-point first-half performance was its highest scoring half of the season. The previous high of 45 was set during the first half vs. Duquesne (12/4/99).
Scoonie Penn notched his first career double-figure assist game, setting a career high with 12 assists. His previous high was eight, which he has set several times during his career, last vs. St. John’s in last season’s NCAA Tournament (3/20/99). He fell two short of Curtis Wilson’s school record of 14 assists, set vs. Purdue on Jan. 7, 1988.
For the second-consecutive game, George Reese broke his career high in scoring. Reese tallied 16 points, breaking his high of 15, set last week vs. Duquesne (12/4/99).
Cobe Ocokojic set a career high with 18 points, doubling his previous high of nine, set vs. Duquesne last week.
OSU dominated on the boards, out-rebounding the Rattlers, 57-34. Ohio State’s 57 rebounds set a Value City Arena record, breaking the previous high of 51, set vs. Duquesne last week. Three Buckeyes – Johnson, Reese and Redd – snatched nine rebounds.
Brian Brown set a career high with 14 points, breaking his high of 10, set twice last season.
Doylan Robinson broke his career high in points, tallying seven in the contest. His previous high was three, also set last week vs. Duquesne. He also dished out a career-high four assists.
Will Dudley broke his career high in points with 12 points. His previous high was 11, set vs. Army last season (11/22/98). He also set a career high in rebounds with six, topping his previous high of five, last set last week vs. Duquesne.
