COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – Dean Oliver scored five points in the last 23 seconds%^$and No. 12 Iowa came back to beat No. 21 Ohio State 71-68 Tuesday night,%^$stretching its winning streak to 11.%^$
Kent McCausland, who matched Oliver with 15 points, hit two long 3-pointer%^$down the stretch as the Hawkeyes took sole possession of first place in the Big%^$Ten.%^$
Iowa (13-1, 4-0 Big Ten), which trailed by nine points early in the second%^$half, pulled even at 55 on a 3-pointer by J.R. Koch with 9:42 left.%^$
Ohio State (13-4, 3-1 Big Ten) scored the next six points, capped by Michael%^$Redd’s dunk off a flashy assist from Scoonie Penn.%^$
The Buckeyes, playing their first game since climbing into the rankings for%^$the first time in six years, led 63-60 after Redd’s rebound follow with 3:49%^$left.%^$
But then McCausland hit back-to-back 3-pointers around a Redd layup to put%^$the Hawkeyes on top for the first time in the half.%^$
Penn answered with a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 57 seconds left%^$give the Buckeyes a 68-66 lead.%^$
Iowa cautiously moved the ball around the perimeter before Oliver faked Penn%^$and tossed up a shot while trying to draw the foul. The foul wasn’t called as%^$the two bumped, but the 3-pointer went in with 23 seconds left to give the%^$Hawkeyes a 69-68 lead.%^$
Ohio State twice lost the ball on turnovers in the final 15 seconds, once%^$when Iowa’s Joey Range slapped the ball out of bounds off Boban Savovic’s leg%^$and the other when Savovic’s pass to Jason Singleton ended up in a tieup with%^$5.8 seconds left.%^$
Oliver hit a pair of foul shots with 4.6 seconds left. Penn then dribbled%^$the length of the court to put up a potential tying 3-pointer at the buzzer%^$that bounced off the front of the rim.%^$
J.R. Koch added 10 points for Iowa, which shot 53 percent from the field.%^$
Penn carried Ohio State for most of the night, scoring 21 points to go with%^$eight assists and five rebounds. Singleton added 13 points and Redd – who came%^$in averaging 19.8 points a game – made his final four shots to finish 6-of-16%^$from the field for 12 points.%^$
The loss was Ohio State’s first after nine wins in its new Value City Arena.%^$The Buckeyes were seeking their third consecutive win against a ranked%^$opponent, a feat they had accomplished only twice before.
