Buckeye’s Road Trip Ends at Dayton – Ohio State Buckeyes

%^$COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Buckeyes (2-0-0) end a three-match road trip Wednesday evening against in-state rival Dayton (2-1-0). Ohio State has never won more than two consecutive road contests in the history of the program and is 3-3-1 all-time against Ohio schools in away games. %^$
%^$OSU vs. DAYTON HISTORY
%^$OSU leads the series 3-1-0 since the teams first met in 1993. The Buckeyes and Flyers have played every year except for 1995 with Ohio State winning in 1993 (1-0 at Columbus), 1994 (1-0 in overtime at Dayton) and 1996 (2-1 at Dayton). The Flyers blanked the Bucks 2-0 in Columbus last year, scoring two of the three goals UD has ever recorded against OSU. %^$
%^$SCOUTING THE FLYERS
%^$The Flyers enter the match after a 3-1 victory over Purdue in the sweltering heat of West Lafayette, Ind. As the temperature topped out in the upper-90’s, the Flyers outshot the Boilermakers 23-7. UD opened the season with a 3-2 win over Ohio which was followed by a 3-1 loss to No. 16 Michigan. Freshman midfielder Sarah Walker leads the Flyers with four points, all coming in UD’s last two matches. Damian Gold and Amy Kemmer have split time in goal with Kemmer posting a 1.57 goals against average, the better of the two. %^$
%^$FRESHMEN LEADING THE CHARGE
%^$True freshman striker Melanie Vierling leads the Buckeyes with four points after she netted a pair of goals against Louisville. The Cincinnati native has three shots on the year and one game-winning goal. Seven rookies have seen action already for the squad and four young Bucks have earned starts (Elisa Hamilton, Courtney Nein, Emily Thorpe and Vierling). The new Bucks have combined for seven shots, three goals and two assists. %^$
%^$OSU VS. PURDUE IN HOME OPENER
%^$The Buckeyes open conference play at home against Purdue, Friday at 5 p.m. The Boilermakers are 0-4-1 in their debut season and are idle until the match against the Buckeyes. %^$
%^$FAMILIAR NAME RETURNS TO OHIO
%^$OSU free safety Gary Berry’s younger sister, Elise is a freshman defender on the Purdue soccer team. Berry attended St. Francis DeSales High School where she became the first player to sign a letter of intent to the new soccer program. Purdue has eight Ohio players on its roster including four other Columbus Area Boilemakers – Rebecca Broering (Westerville), Sarah Barnes (Worthington), Christina Creamer (Powell) and Kate Queen (Columbus). %^$
%^$BIG WEEK FOR BIG TEN
%^$Six Big Ten teams started the season off with a bang as Indiana is 3-0-0 and Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Ohio State and Penn State are all 2-0-0 after the first week of play. Overall, the conference posted a 17-7-2 record for the first week of the season. Purdue and No. 15 Minnesota are the only conference teams that have not recorded a victory. %^$
%^$BARNES DOESN’T MIND GOING SOLO
%^$Sophomore Amber Barnes is the lone goalkeeper on the OSU roster, but has recorded shutouts in both contests bringing her career total to 5.5 which is third on the OSU ledger. Barnes is also third for career saves with 97 and is steadily climbing both charts. %^$

%^$HEAD COACH LORI WALKER
%^$The North Carolina graduate is 11-9-1 in her second season as head coach of the Buckeyes and 24-32-2 for her four-year career. She is one of the youngest Division I coaches at 27 years of age and just the second women’s soccer mentor in OSU history. She led her 1997 Buckeye squad to the second highest winning percentage (.500) in school history and advanced to the conference tournament. Walker first coached at Kansas for two years before accepting the position at OSU. %^$
%^$MATCH TWO AT LOUISVILLE
%^$Vierling scored two goals, one in each half, helping the Buckeyes shutout Louisville 5-0. Vierling was part of a dominating OSU offense that outshot the Cardinals 19-9. Mia Katzel tallied a goal and an assist on the day, while Melissa Fox and Brynn Catino also netted a goal apiece. Barnes recorded three saves and her second consecutive shutout of the year. %^$
%^$MATCH ONE AT EVANSVILLE
%^$Senior defender Jennifer Plante came off the bench to score the game winning goal in OSU’s 1-0 win at Evansville. In the 24th minute, Plante netted a stray ball that was rolling in front of the goal mouth after a corner kick, her only shot of the day. Barnes moved her career shutout mark to 4.5 while recording six saves on the day. %^$

%^$PARK RIDGE, IL — On two recently released national soccer polls the Big Ten women’s soccer programs ranked among the top 20 elite schools on both. Headlining the two polls were the Michigan Wolverines who ranked No. 16 in Soccer America’s Preseason Collegiate Top 20 poll and No. 17 on the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Women’s NCAA Division I Preseason poll (NSCAA/Umbro). %^$
%^$PLAYER OF THE WEEK FOR SEPT. 7
%^$Bonnie Young, Penn State, Fr., Forward, Spring, Texas/Klein High School Bonnie Young started in her first collegiate game for Penn State and helped the Nittany Lions to a 2-0 mark to begin the season. Young tallied three shots and assisted on the first goal of the season against Pittsburgh. In Friday’s upset over No. 18 Maryland she scored all three of PSU’s goals, Posting the first-ever hattrick in school history. Young also set the game records for goals and points in one contest.
