%^$This Week – Ohio State will be hosting it’s only home regatta of the season against the University of Iowa and Michigan State University this Saturday. MSU finished second in the San Diego Classic competing in the Californa Cup last weekend. They also defeated Kansas State, Kansas, and Drake in a quad meet. Iowa defeated North Carolina Universtiy in a dual meet on April 3. %^$

%^$Last Week – The Ohio State crew split and went their separate ways. Half of the team went to Oakridge, Tenn and the other half competed in the San Diego Classic. In Tennessee, the Buckeyes finished first in the Novice 8, Varsity 8, and Second Novice 8. The Varsity four boat finished second with a time of 7:28.7 behind Tennesse with a time of 7:26.7. In San Diego the Buckeyes finished elventh overall for the Jessoop-Whittier Cup. %^$

%^$Good Stuff – The Buckeyes have won the Marshall Inviational a total of 15 times including five since 1991. The last time Ohio State won the tournament was two years ago in 1996.%^$

%^$ This Week -The Ohio State men’s golf team travels to Huntington, W. Va. to compete in the Marshall Invitational at the Guyan Country Club on Friday and Saturday. Last year the Buckeyes finished second at the Marshall Invitational, five strokes behind tournament champions, Northwestern. %^$

%^$ Last Week — The Buckeyes took seventh place at the U.S. Intercollegiate Golf Championship in St. Augustine, Fla. on Friday through Sunday. Ohio State completed the tournament with a 26 over par-890. The Buckeyes finished 22 strokes behind first place Florida State. Leading the Buckeyes for the second straight tournament was senior Ryan Armour (Silver Lake, Ohio). Armour followed his spectacular individual medalist performance at the Furman Invitational with a ninth place finish at the U.S. Collegiate Golf Championship. Armour tallied a three round total two over par-218. Jeff Brown (Sr., Columbus, Ohio) was the OSU’s next highest finisher, tied for 17th. Brown shot a 221, just five strokes over par. Notes — Ohio State returns home on April 18-19 to host the Kepler Intercollegiate at the OSU Scarlet Course. This will be the Buckeyes only home match of the season. %^$

%^$This Week – Ohio State is idle. The Buckeyes will next compete at the Lady Buckeye Spring Invitational on April 25-26 at the Scarlet Golf Course. Competing at the Lady Buckeye will be Northwestern, Notre Dame, Ohio, Penn State, Purdue, Wisconsin and Xavier. %^$

%^$Last Week – The Buckeye placed second out of a field of 15 teams with a score of 935 (47) at the Indiana Invitational. Natalie Mosher (Jr., New Philadelphia, Ohio) was Ohio State’s top finisher, tying for fifth with a score of 230 (+8). Notes – Ohio State has come back strong in the past two tournaments and will be ready to compete against several of the Big Ten’s top players at the Lady Buckeye Invitational. Mosher has played well to lead the team with the best average of 75.4 per round. Lisa Strom has also stepped up and is averaging a 79 after 18 rounds. Out of the seven teams Ohio State will compete against at the Lady Buckeye, the Buckeyes defeated five of the teams at last week’s Indiana Invitational. %^$

%^$Last Week– The Buckeyes took first place at the NCAA East Regional Championships Saturday night, qualifying the team for the NCAA Championships on April 16-18 at Penn State University. Ohio State has won the East Regional meet for three straight years. The East Regional victory comes in the wake of a third place finish at the Big Ten Championships two weeks ago. First year head coach Miles Avery said that the teams goal going into the Regional meet was to first qualify for the NCAA championships and second to win the meet. ”We feel very good about this victory, and we are confident we can compete with any team, ” coach Avery said. Illinois, Iowa, BYU, Oklahoma and defending NCAA Champion California will join the Buckeyes at the NCAA Championships. %^$

%^$Good Stuff – Six Buckeyes were named to the 1997-98 Academic all-Big Ten team – Farmer, Lacey Hudson, Stefanie Light, Jill McMillion, Becky Wolfe, and Jennifer Zwilling. These gymnasts must maintain a 3.0 GPA or higher during the competitive season to qualify. %^$

%^$This Week – The Buckeyes are finished with postseason competition. %^$

%^$Last Week – With a team score of 193.525, the Buckeyes took second place to Big Ten foe Penn State at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships in Pittsburgh, Pa. The Nittany Lions outscored the Buckeyes by 1.075 points, reclaiming the regional title for the third consecutive year. Susan Eckman (Jr., Boardman, Ohio) captured a first place victory on the uneven bars with a score of 9.850. Eckman also placed third on vault (9.775) and in the all-around competition with a score of 38.95. Freshman sensation Lindsey Vagedes (Warrenville, Ill.) took second place in the vault (9.875), all-around (39.00) and tied for second on the floor exercise (9.850) with teammate Mindi Farmer (Jr., Indianapolis, Ind.) and Missy Leopoldus of Penn State. Farmer also placed second on the balance beam and took fourth place in the all-around (38.825). %^$

%^$Good Stuff – The Buckeyes added a game against the University of North Carolina on April 29 to their schedule. The game will begin at 2:30 p.m. The Tar Heels are ranked No. 13 in the Face-Off poll and is also the alma mater of Buckeye head coach Joe Breschi. %^$

%^$This Week – Ohio State will be hosting Great Western Lacrosse League rival Butler on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Woody Hayes Athletic Complex. The Bulldogs are currently ranked No. 14 in the latest Face-Off Magazine national Media Poll. Butler sits on top of the GWLL standings at 2-0 while the Buckeyes are looking to snap a four game losing streak and gain their first league win. %^$

%^$Last Week – The Buckeyes traveled to South Bend, Ind. to take on Notre Dame in their first conference game of the season and were defeated 12-2. The Bucks scored the opening goal of the game on Todd Miller’s (Jr., Hilliard, Ohio) shot at 11:44 of the first quarter, but the Fighting Irish dominated the rest of the game allowing only one more Buckeye goal. Buddy Lange (So., Annandale, N.J.) netted his eighth goal of the year to tie Greg Zytkowski (So., North Olmstead, Ohio) for the team lead. %^$

%^$Notes – Ohio State opens up a four game home stand when they face Butler. Teams making their way to the Woody Hayes Athletic facility will be the Bulldogs, Wooster, Denver, and Air Force. Denver and Air Force are GWLL foes along with Butler. %^$

%^$This Week – The Buckeyes are on the road this week, facing Davidson and Virginia Tech. The Wildcats are currently 3-3 overall and are coming off a loss to Virgina Tech 21-11. The Wildcats did not lose anyone from last years 9-7 team. Key returnees include senior Sarah Hogan and sophomore Amanda Fleck, who combined for a total of 83 points last season (66 goals, 17 assists). Virginia Tech enters its game with OSU on a four game winning streak. Three of those four victories were by more than ten goals.tent. %^$

%^$Last Week – The Buckeyes went 1-2 overall on the week. They defeated Duquesne and lost to Notre Dame and Vanderbilt. OSU dominated the Dukes 14-2, as Laurie Rybak (Jr., Worthington, Ohio) scored four goals, two of which came in the first half. Gillian Grim (So., Shaker Heights, Ohio), Lorena Opitz (Sr., Worthington, Ohio) and Mara Simpson (Sr., Worthington, Ohio) also each scored two goals. Notre Dame topped Ohio State 10-9 . The Buckeyes dominated the first half winning free possessions and outscoring the Irish 7-3, but UND outscored OSU 7-2 in the second half to seal the victory. Vanderbilt bestedthe Buckeyes by an 11-7 count. The Buckeyes were down 5-4 at the six minute mark when the Commodores scored two quick goals right before the half to take the wind out of Ohio State’s sail. %^$Good Stuff – Over the weekend, the team of Ben Basil (Jr., Upper Arlington, Ohio) and Scott Wiles (Sr., Massillon, Ohio) recorded a huge upset by defeating Northwestern’s top team and No. 17 ranked Bengtsson/Witt 9-7 in doubles action. Basil/Wiles now have a two-game winning streak as they head to Illnois. %^$

%^$This Week – The Buckeyes (4-16, 0-7) will play their toughest matches of the season this weekend, competing against Illinois on Friday at 2 p.m. in Champaign, Ill. The Illini, last year’s Big Ten champs have been on a roll in the league, posting a 9-5 record overall and 2-0 record in Big Ten action. Last year, Ohio State was defeated by the Fighting Illini 5-0, giving Illinois an all-time record of 43-25-1 against the Buckeyes. Ohio State will then travel to Lafayette, Ind. to compete against Purdue on Sat. at 12 p.m. Purdue has played tough in its past matches to record a 1-1 record in the Big Ten. Last season, Ohio State was downed by the Boilermakers 6-1, however Ohio State has a 57-16 all-time record against Purdue. %^$

%^$Last Week – Ohio State was defeated by Wisconsin (4-3) and Northwestern (7-0) over the weekend. Notes – Key match-ups for this weekend will be Bob Wellstein (Fr., Perrysburg, Ohio) against Illinois’ Big Ten Player of the Month Jakub Teply. Teply has been impressive, posting a 5-1 record at the No.5 position and a record of 19-13 overall. Ohio State will also need a stellar performance from freshman Chris Porter (Canton, Ohio), who went 1-1 last weekend and has an 18-12 record overall. %^$

The team heads to Evanston, Ill. to take on the Northwestern Wildcats (7-9, 2-2) on Saturday at 10 a.m. and then travel to Madison, Wisc. to face the Wisconsin Badgers (10-8, 4-0) on Sunday at 10 a.m. %^$

%^$Last Week – Ohio State fell short to the Indiana Hoosiers 5-2 in Bloomington, Ind. on Saturday. The loss was the Buckeyes second straight in Big Ten action. Indiana got the best of the Buckeyes taking four of the six singles games and earned the doubles point winning two of the three doubles games. OSU received its only two points of the match from the freshmen tandem of Kristy Dascoli (Bradenton, Fla.) and Briana Harris (Bradenton, Fla.). Dascoli won by default over the Hoosiers Correne Stout at the No. 1 spot, while in the No. 2 position, Harris came back to defeat Kelly Blanch in three sets (5-7, 6-3, 6-1) after dropping the first set. Harris and Dascoli then teamed up in the doubles competition to beat Stout and Blanch 8-5 for the Buckeyes only win in doubles play. %^$

%^$Good Stuff – All-American Porter is leaping into her final outdoor campaign as a Buckeye. She captured first place in both the long jump (19’1-1/4?) and the triple jump (41’4?) last weekend. During the 1998 campaign, she has been jumping consistently better than her first three years at OSU. %^$

%^$This Week – Ohio State will travel to Berkeley, Calif. on Saturday to compete in the Brutus Hamilton Memorial Invitational in Edwards Track Stadium. Participating schools scheduled to compete include Cal State, CSU, Bakersfield, Cal Poly, Chico State, UC Davis, Humboldt State, Boise State, Nevada, Ohio State, Oregon, Sacramento State, Stanford, USC and Wisconsin. %^$

%^$Last Week – The OSU track and field team competed in the Pac-10 vs. Big Ten meet on Saturday in Los Angeles, Calif. The men’s and women’s teams finished in fourth place. The men’s team champion was Arizona (78 points), while USC was the women’s overall winner (76 points). The Buckeyes were led by veterans Sekou Smith (Sr., Chicago, Ill.) and Tamieka Porter (Sr., Escondido, Calif.). Notes – Other leading Buckeyes included newcomer Ian Connor (Fr., Lexington, Ohio) with a third place finish in the 3,000 steeplechase (9:11.1), Dominque Calloway (So., Aurora, Colo.) with second place in the 100 hurdles (13.71) and fifth in the 200 (24.86) and Ayanna Reece (Jr., Bronx, N.Y.) with third place in the 400 hurdles (1:02.08). Desiree Jones (Fr., Akron, Ohio) has been competing efficiently in several events for the Buckeyes every week. Last weekend she finished in the top five in the javelin, long jump and triple jump. %^$

%^$Good Stuff – Ohio State has won 21 consecutive matches since a 3-1 loss to Stanford in January. The Buckeyes have defeated 12 of 13 nationally ranked opponents this season. %^$This Week – Second-ranked (USA TODAY/AVCA) Ohio State (24-1 overall, 10-0 Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) will host Clarke College (10-15, 0-10) in a quarterfinal match of the MIVA Tournament Saturday night at 7:30 in St. John Arena. The winner advances to the MIVA semifinals at Ball State on April 17. The championship is April 18 at Ball State. %^$

%^$Last Week – Ohio State won three MIVA matches in four days to capture the regular season championship of the MIVA with a 10-0 record. The Buckeyes defeated Ball State (15-10, 15-6, 15-12), #11 Loyola (17-15, 15-6, 15-7) and #9 Lewis (15-17, 15-8, 6-15, 15-6, 15-13) to extend its winning streak to 21 matches. Jose Pereira (So., San Juan, Puerto Rico) had 14 kills and 14 digs in the win at Ball State. Against Loyola Jeff Koterba (Sr., Martinsville, N.J.) scored 21 kills with Rene’ Esteves (So., San Juan, Puerto Rico) adding 20. Koterba pounded 30 kills and had 10 blocks against Lewis with Colin McMillan (Jr., Burlington, Wisconsin) adding 26 kills and 10 blocks.%^$

%^$ Notes – Ohio State has defeated Clarke twice this season, 15-3, 15-11, 15-12 at Dubuque and 15-9, 15-8, 15-7 in Columbus in the first two meetings for the teams. OSU’s MIVA championship is its 15th in the last 31 years. This marks the ninth outright championship for the Buckeyes with the other six either co or tri championships.%^$
