CHICAGO (AP) – Andrae Patterson snapped out of a four-game slump with 25 points and Bob Knight remained calm most of Thursday night as Indiana won its Big Ten tournament opener, 78-71 over Ohio State.
Knight, who might be suspended by the league for berating a referee last month, is expected to be coaching again Friday when the Hoosiers (19-10) face Purdue in the semifinals.
Indiana must inform the conference by Monday whether Knight will sit out a game or the school will pay a $10,000 fine, according to reports.
Michael Redd scored 25 points for Ohio State (8-22), ending a season in which it won only one Big Ten game and set a team record with a 17-game losing streak. Redd, the first true freshman ever to lead the conference in scoring, finished at 21.9 points per game.
Knight sat quietly on the bench for most of the game but did start to get agitated in the closing minutes, when the scrappy Buckeyes rallied from a 17-point deficit to within four. On one occasion, Knight screamed at forward Charlie Miller, but the coach never got into it with the referees.
A.J. Guyton added 23 points for Indiana, which had lost its previous three games by an average of 24 points. The Hoosiers shot only 38 percent in the defeats, but hit 47 percent Thursday.
Patterson, a frequent visitor to Knight’s doghouse over the years, was 9-of-14 from the floor. The previous four games, the senior forward averaged 5.8 points on 29 percent shooting.
Ken Johnson’s rebound basket with 15:23 to go pulled Ohio State within four at 39-35. Patterson then sparked a 10-0 run with seven points, including a 3-pointer, and Indiana eventually went ahead 67-50.
Poor free-throw shooting by the Hoosiers helped the Buckeyes pull to 75-71 on Neshaun Coleman’s 3-pointer with 18.5 seconds left. But Luke Jimenez made one free throw and Luke Recker hit two to wrap up Indiana’s victory.
