This Week – Ohio State will travel to Oakridge, Tenn. to battle Tennessee in a dual regatta. The Lady Volunteers finished 2nd at the Tennessee Cup and 3rd at the Lexus Invitational.%^$
Last Week – Ohio State competed in their first regatta of the spring season in Ann Arbor, Mich. The Buckeyes split theier regattas, defeating North Carolina and losing to Virginia. Both varsity boats defeated UNC but the novice boat came up short against the Tar Heels. Ohio State dropped all races to the Virginia.%^$
Notes – Due to wind and rain, times in the morning races were slower than those in the afternoon. %^$

Men’s Golf
%^$1997-98 Record – 59-25 overall

Good Stuff – The Buckeyes improved their record to 59-25 with their second place finish at the Furman Invitational and are 40-2 in their last two tournaments.%^$
This Week – The Ohio State men’s golf team will journey to Orlando, Fla. to participate in the U.S. Intercollegiate, Friday through Sunday.%^$
Last Week — The Buckeyes fell just short of the tournament champion at the Furman Invitational in Greensville, S.C. For the second straight meet, OSU came in second place. The Buckeyes scored a nine over par-873, which was a mere four strokes behind tournament champion Virginia Commonwealth. A combination of experience and youth paved the way for the Buckeyes. Ryan Armour (Sr., Silver Lake, Ohio) was an individual medalist, edging out all other golfers with an amazing seven under par-209. Armour was the first Buckeye golfer to become an individual medal this season. The other three scoring OSU golfers all placed within the top 22. Senior Jeff Brown (Columbus, Ohio) was the Buckeyes next highest finisher tied at 10th place with a 219, while freshman Mike Austin (Burton, Mich.) tied for 20th (222) and Albert Hromulak (Jr., Johnstown, Pa.) tied for 22nd (223), one stroke behind Austin. %^$

Women’s Golf
%^$1997-98 Record – 59-43-1, 20-1 in Big Ten
%^$Head Coach – Therese Hession, seventh year (Southern Methodist ’79)%^$
Good Stuff – In the second round of the Bryan Collegiate, Ohio State posted a 301, which is four strokes lower than its tournament average. Ohio State will compete at home on April 25-26 at the Scarlet Golf Course.%^$
This Week – Ohio State will travel to Bloomington, Ind. to compete at the Indiana Invitational, April 4-5. Last year, the Buckeyes placed first with a total team score of 623 and Natalie Mosher (Jr., New Philadelphia, Ohio) tied for 14th place individually.%^$
Last Week – The Buckeye tied for seventh at the Bryan National Collegiate tournament. Marisa Wilhelm (Sr., Brookville, Ind.) was Ohio State’s top finisher, tying for 11th place.
Notes – Ohio State has come back strong this spring season to post a team average score of 305. With her second round score of 73 and an 11th place finish last weekend, Wilhelm posted the lowest round and best finish of the season. Mosher is leading the team by averaging 75.2 per round. Behind Mosher is Bethany Overstake (Sr., Urbana, Ohio) with an average of 76.4. %^$

Men’s Gymnastics

Good Stuff — Peter Landry’s three way tie for first place on the parallel bars is his first Big Ten individual championship.%^$
This Week – Ohio State will travel to Amherst, Mass. for the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships, April 4, at the University of Massachusetts. The Buckeyes placed first in the NCAA Regionals last year with a score of 231.6. The Buckeyes took third place behind Iowa (230.525) and Penn State ( 229.975) at the Big Ten Championships two weeks ago. Ohio State scored 229.6.%^$

Women’s Gymnastics

Head Coach – Larry Cox, 19th year (Arizona State, ’77)%^$
Good Stuff– Lindsey Vagedes (Fr., Warrenville, Ill.) and Mindi Farmer (Jr., Indianapolis, Ind.) were the only Buckeyes selected to the 1998 All-Big Ten Team. Farmer has been listed for two consecutive years.%^$
This Week – Ohio State will travel to Pittsburgh, Pa. to compete in the NCAA Regional championships on April 4. “Our main focus is to do a great job and get to the National competition,” said head coach Larry Cox. “We had several powerful practices last week and the team is ready to bounce back and get down to business.” In regional rankings, OSU is No. 2 in the Northeast region (193.719). They are 0.500 of a point behind No. 1 Penn State (194.219). “Penn State is a good team,” Cox said. “We are very similar to them performance wise.” OSU defeated Penn State in the regular season 193.075-92.150. Other top five competitors in the Northeast region are No. 3 New Hampshire, No. 4 Massachusetts and No. 5 Kent.

Men’s Lacrosse
%^$1998 Record – 1-4%^$
Head Coach – Joe Breschi (North Carolina ’90), 1st year%^$
Good Stuff – Three different size sticks are used in lacrosse. Typically, defenders use long sticks to help them slap away the ball from opposing attackers. Midfielders use a variety of sticks depending on the situation, and attackmen use short sticks to help them maneuver easily and get off fast shots to the goal.%^$
This Week – Ohio State travels to South Bend, Ind. to take on Notre Dame on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. The matchup with the Fighting Irish marks the first Great Western Lacrosse League game of the season for the Buckeyes. Ohio State leads the overall series 18-16, but have dropped eight in a row to Notre Dame.%^$
Last Week – Ohio State dropped two matches. They lost 18-6 at No 5-ranked Loyola (Md.) and a heartbreaking 12-11 home loss to Radford. Buddy Lange (So., Annandale, N.J.) scored two goals in each game and Greg Zytkowski (So., North Olmstead, Ohio) got hot against Radford scoring four goals and an assist. Kevin Johnson (Jr., Penfield, N.Y) continued to lead the Buckeyes in scoring as he netted a goal and an assist in each game. The Buckeyes blew leads of 6-1 and 8-4 in the loss to Radford. Radford stiffened its defense allowing only three second half goals, while scoring eight goals in the second half comeback. %^$
Notes – Goalie Mike Abeles (So., Westfield, N.J.) saw his first action of the year against Loyola. He played the entire second half recording 12 saves and six goals against. Zytkowski’s four goals against Radford was the most in one game this season for the Buckeyes while his five points were also a game and season high. %^$

Women’s Lacrosse

Good Stuff – Mara Simpson (Sr., Worthington, Ohio) has scored a goal in every game accept against Pennsylvania.%^$
This Week – The Buckeyes will play host to Duquesne, Wednesday, April 1, at 4 p.m., Notre Dame, Saturday, April 4, at 1 p.m., and Vanderbilt, Sunday, April 5, at 2 p.m.%^$
Last Week – Ohio State concluded its spring break games going 2-2 on the week. They defeated Standford, 20-9 and LaSalle, 15-6 but lost to No.1-ranked North Carolina, 15-5 and a close game to Pennsylvania, 9-6
Notes – Duquesne is the only school who Ohio State faces this week with a losing record. They are currently 1-2. %^$

Men’s Swimming and Diving

Good Stuff – Ohio State senior Kevin Kling (Louisville, Ky.) set a school record in the 100 breaststroke in the preliminary races at the NCAA Championships in Auburn, Ala., with a time of :53.82. Kling eventually went on to claim 5th place.%^$
This Week – The Ohio State men’s swimming and diving team has concluded this years season.%^$
Last Week – The Buckeyes had six swimmers and one diver compete in the NCAA Championships in Auburn, Ala., on Thursday through Saturday. OSU placed 20th, compiling 67 team points. This was the Buckeyes highest finish since the 1993-94 season when the team placed 15th. Mike McIntyre (Orlando, Fla.,) as a sophomore showed confidence and consistency, scoring points in all three diving events. McIntyre’s highest finish came in platform diving, where he took seventh. He also took eighth in the three-meter springboard and 13th in the one-meter springboard. Three of the four Ohio State relay teams also scored points for the Buckeyes. The 400 medley relay team of Marko Strahija (Sr., Zagreb, Croatia), Kevin Kling (Sr., Louisville, Ky.), Jason Fox (So., Goshen, Ind.) and Brian Malich (Fr., Mason, Ohio) placed 11th with a time of 3:14.32. The 200 medley relay team consisting of the same four swimmers took 14th with a time of 1:29.00 and the 400 freestyle relay team of Malich and Kling along with Niclas Ohman (Sr., Fagersta, Sweden) and Matt Braun (So., Berkley, Mich.) came in 15th (2:58.22). Notable individual performances came from Strahija and Kling who both earned points placing in their events. Kling had the Buckeyes highest finish of the meet taking fifth in the 100 breaststroke (:53.93) and Strahija finished 13th in the 200 backstroke (1:45.30). %^$

Men’s Tennis

Good Stuff – Pari Laxminarayan (Jr., Bangalore, India) has an overall record of 13-7 in doubles this season and carries a 9-5 posting at the No. 2 spot.%^$
This Week – The Buckeyes (4-11, 0-5) will try to capture their first Big Ten win, when they compete against Wisconsin (7-4,1-2 Big Ten) at 1p.m. on Sat. at the Stickney Tennis Center. This will be the first outdoor home match of the season. The Buckeye will wrap-up the weekend against Northwestern (5-1, 1-0 Big Ten) at 1p.m. on Sunday. The Wildcats are ranked 13th in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll, with three of their players ranked among the top 60 nationally.%^$
Last Week – Ohio State traveled to Santa Barbara, Calif. to compete in the Third Annual Gaucho tournament. The Buckeyes were defeated by Harvard (4-0), Oregon (4-2) and Cal Poly (4-2)%^$
Notes – Chris Porter (Fr., Canton, Ohio) is leading the team with a singles record of 17-11 overall and a 9-5 record at the No. 2 doubles position . Porter will have to play solid as he goes head-to head against several of the Big Ten’s top players this weekend. Northwestern’s Marc Silva, the 1998 Big Ten Singles champion and the No.20 ranked player in the nation, has posted a 4-0 record at both the No.1 and No. 2 position. Another strong point needed for this week is the No. 1 doubles team of Scott Wiles (Sr., Massillon, Ohio) and Ben Basil (Jr., Upper Arlington, Ohio). Basil and Wiles will most likely compete against Wisconsin’s top team of Mark Loughrin and Adam Schumaker, who have downed their past three opponents. %^$

Women’s Tennis
%^$1997-98 Record – 7-8, 1-3 in Big Ten%^$
Head Coach – Chuck Merzbacher, second year (Minnesota ’87)%^$
Good Stuff – Freshman Briana Harris (Bradenton, Fla.) swept her competition last week, winning all three of her matches, while teammates Kristy Dascoli (Fr., Bradenton, Fla.) and Mandy Yeley (Sr., Wheelersburg, Ohio) each won two of three matches.%^$
This Week – The Buckeyes (7-8, 1-3) will travel to Bloomington, Ind. to do battle against the Indiana Hoosiers (8-5, 2-2) on Saturday at 10 a.m. The Hoosiers are hot of a crushing victory over Michigan State. Indiana won the meet 7-0 in a clean sweep of every match, both singles and doubles.%^$
Last Week – The Ohio State women’s tennis team went 1-2 in dual meets. The Buckeyes fell to Michigan (7-6, 4-1) on Sunday by a score of 5-2 and Kansas State on Tuesday by a 6-3 margin. OSU picked up its first Big Ten victory of the season nipping Michigan State 4-3 on Saturday. The freshman phenoms out of Bradenton, Fla., Kristy Dascoli and Briana Harris, continued to dominate as each picked up their second wins of the week in straight sets against their Michigan State opponents. Dascoli and Harris also teamed up to win their doubles match in an 8-0 shutout. The Buckeyes won two of three doubles matches to earn one point, lifting OSU past the Spartans.
Notes – Due to high winds the Buckeyes dual meet against UNLV on Wednesday was canceled and will not be rescheduled. %^$

Track and Field%^$1997-98 Record-M-0-0-0, 0-0-0 in Big Ten, W-0-0-0, 0-0-0 in Big Ten Track & Field%^$
Head Coach – Russ Rogers, 9th year (Maryland-Baltimore County ’65)%^$
Good Stuff – All-American Domininque Calloway (So., Aurora, Colo.) recorded the third fastest time in OSU history in the 110-meter hurdles (13.26). The school record of 12.90 was recorded in 1980 by Buckeye great Stephanie Hightower (1977-80).%^$
This Week – Ohio State will travel to Los Angeles to compete in the Trojan Invitational on Saturday. This will be a four-way meet consisting of duals between Southern California, Ohio State, Arizona and Michigan.%^$
Last Week – The OSU track and field team competed in the Baldy Castillo Invitational Friday and Saturday at Arizona State in Tempe, Ariz. There was no team scoring. Participating schools included Arizona State, Central Michigan, Colorado, Dartmouth, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana State, Manhattan, Michigan, Minnesota, Northern Arizona, Ohio State, Toledo and Wyoming. %^$

Men’s Volleyball%^$1998 Record – 21-1, 7-0 in Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Head Coach – Pete Hanson, 14th year (Ball State ’79)%^$
Good Stuff – Ohio State has won 18 consecutive matches since a 3-1 loss to Stanford in January. The Buckeyes have defeated nine of ten nationally ranked opponents this season. This Week – Fifth-ranked Ohio State (21-1 overall, 7-0 Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) travels to Ball State for a Wednesday match and then closes out the regular season hosting 11th ranked Loyola (Ill.) Friday and ninth-ranked Lewis Saturday.%^$
Last Week – Ohio State completed a three-match swing on the West Coast with one of the biggest wins in the history of the program as the Buckeyes upset No. 1 Pepperdine 3-1 (16-14, 13-15, 16-14, 15-9). Prior to that match OSU defeated No. 10 Loyola Marymount 3-1 (15-6, 15-4, 11-15, 15-11). Ohio State then returned to MIVA action with a 3-1 (14-16, 15-7, 15-9, 15-6) road win over Mercyhurst College. Jose Rivera (So. Waukegan, Illinois) had the big match against Pepperdine scoring 27 kills and 14 digs. Jeff Koterba (Sr., Martinsville, New Jersey) added 20 kills in the upset. Buckeye Ren
