Synchronized Swimming Falls to Stanford in National Championships – Ohio State Buckeyes

MINNEAPOLIS, MN — Stanford University took top honors in four events to upset 13-year champion Ohio State University for the overall title at the 1998 U.S. Collegiate Synchronized Swimming Championships at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center. The Cardinal finished with 94 points, to edge Ohio State by six points.%^$
Olympic gold medalist Heather Pease of Stanford placed first in A Figures, Solo, Duet and Trio to win the individual high point title. Pease teamed with national team member Vanessa Shaw in Duet and added former junior national team member Shannon Montague in Trio.%^$
“It took the hard work of the entire team to acheive this goal,” said Stanford coach Vicky Weir. “It’s an unbelievable accomplishment for our team and Stanford athletics.”%^$
Ohio State had won an unprecedented 13 consecutive overall titles. However, the loss of eight seniors from last year’s team opened the door for Stanford to capture its first overall title in the event’s 22-year history. %^$
