Fencing competes in the NCAA Championships – Ohio State Buckeyes

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Ohio State traveled to Notre Dame, Ind. to compete in the NCAA Championships. The Buckeyes finished in 11th place with 42 points by combining the men’s and women’s scores. The Penn State Nittany Lions captured their fourth straight team championship with 149 points beating host Notre Dame by only two wins. All-Americans Patricia Szelle (Sr., Budapest, Hungary) and Yelena Kalkina (So., Almaty, Kazakhstan) represented the Buckeyes in the foil finishing seventh and eighth respectively. Felicia Zimmerman of Stanford University was the individual champion. Kalkina was the defending national champion and remains OSU’s sole women’s national champion. George Hentea of St. John’s University seized the men’s epee title. In his first NCAA appearance, OSU’s epee specialist Geoff Kane (So., Vancouver, Wash.) placed 15th and recorded 10 victories in the tournament.
